UNITED STATES THOMAS A. ANDERSON, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
CIGAR-BUNCH CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 739,278, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed March 25,1903- Serlal No. 149,467. (No model.) I
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, THOMAS A. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Bunch Out ters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a cigar-bunch cutter; and the object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which a longfiller cigar-bunch may be cut in such a form that a shapely cigar will result when said bunch is wrapped without interfering with the draft therethrough by reason of tightlyformed ends. 7
The invention consists of a peculiarly-constructed device into which the tobacco is fed and a cutting-knife operating in conjunction therewith.
The invention is more fullydescribedin the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the bunching-box. Fig.. 4 is a rear view ofthe cutting-knife. Fig. 5 shows in two views the cigar-bunch that my device will out. Fig. 6 shows the form of the completed cigar. Fig. 7 shows a leaf of tobacco taken from a cut bunch'developed.
. and at such an angle as to produce a reduced forward end havinga mouth-shaped opening 2 across the end of said box. To the top of this box 1 is secureda vertical guide-rod 4. The box 1 is adapted for attachment at its rear to the feed device in any suitable manner, whereby the tobacco may enter the same for bunching and cutting.
The numeral 5 designates the cutter head, the blades of which are arranged at an angle to each other, so. as to fit closely against the sides of the box near its reduced end. This cutter has two cutting edges 6, each of which shears off the tobacco projecting'from the opening 2-, formed at the reduced end of the box 1. The cutting-knife has a sleeve 7 formed on its top, which top is closed, and

this sleeve travels up and down on the guiderod 4. A link 8 is secured to the .top of the sleeve 7 many suitable manner, or, if desired, may be screwed to the end of said sleeve, and is provided with an arm- 9 on either side, which depend below the bunching-box and are joined at their lower ends by a suitable link 10, to which is connected an' operating-rod 11, through which vertical motion is given to the cuttingknife. These arms 9 are preferably rigidly secured to the ends of the links 8; but, if desired, they may be pivoted thereto. bunches are entered into the box from the rear, the knife is caused to descend through the action of the operating links and rods 9, 10, and 11 and out the bunches in the form shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the portion 12 cut away from the rear of one bunch forming the front or tip of the next bunch. This form of bunch will permit a shapely cigar 14 to be rolled without endangering the free draft. (See Fig. 6.) I
InFig. 7 I have shown what may be supposed to be a leaf of tobacco 13 that was contained in a bunch and cut on my device. After being developed as shown it reveals the effect on each piece of tobacco in the bunch. The device is operated automatically, the movement of the cutting-knife being vertical, while the bunching-box remains stationary. By my present device the complete bunch is When the tobaccocut at a single stroke of the knife and there is absolutely no Waste, as the form of the bunch,
when out, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings,
will illustrate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cigar-bunch cutter comprlsing a taper-f 2 w sts cured to the collar at an alngie to each other In testimony whereof I affix my signature and in such a position as to slide against the in presence of two Witnesses.
sides of the box, links secured to the collar and passing below the box, a connection at VIHOMAS ANDERSON the free ends of the links and an operating- Witnesses:
rod secured to the connection for reciprocat- O. E. HERR,
