TROUSERS-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 739,260, dated September 15, 1903. A
Application filed January 24, 1903. Serial No. 140,385. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. HYLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and- State of Wisconsin,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to devices forsuspending trousers when not in use; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my said device, partly broken away to better illustrate certain details of construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same with the upper hanger in a changed position.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the standards of the device, united by the top piece 3 and the lower brace 4. J ournaled in the standards are the hangers, four of which are shown (marked, respectively, 5, 6, 7, and 8),and whose side arms regularly increase in length, as shown, the
arms of the upper hanger 5 being the shortest and those of the lower hanger 8 the longest of all. On a line vertically forward of the vertical line of the pivotal points of the hanger-arms one of the standards is provided with a series of horizontal perforations fitted with spring-bolts 9 9 for supporting the hangers in horizontal position, as shown with hanger 5 in Fig. 2.
My device is adapted to be either suspended, as from the screw-eyes 10 10, on nails, screws, or other projections upon a wall or closet or wardrobe door or to stand upon the base 11, as preferred in any instance, and if economy of space is necessary when the device is suspended, as from the inner side of a door, the base 11 can be readily removed, as it is held to the standards 1 2 by the frictional contact of the dowel-pins 12 within corresponding bores in the lower ends of the standards, although the said base 11 makes a very convenientshoe-shelf in use.
The operation of my device will be readily understood from the foregoing description of its construction, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, When it is desired ers will be supported thereby, as illustrated with the upper hanger 5 in Fig. 2, and the trousers are doubled and suspended upon the hangers, which swing back to their normal position when the spring-bolts are again retracted, and as each successive hanger projects forwardly to a point beyond that of the projection of the hanger above there is no interference' between the trousers on the different hangers even when all the said haugers are projected at the same time.
- My device will be found extremely convenient, particularly where economy of space is desired, and owing to its extreme simplicity there is practically nothing about it to get out of order at any time, and as the hangers are all of a double-crank shape the arms lie close to the standard when in their normal or suspended position, whereby practically the entire space between the standards is utilized;
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a trousers-hanger, the combination with a pair of uprightstandards, of atop'piece andlowerbraceunitingsaidstandards,aseries of 'hangers,each of a double-crank shape, 3' ournaled at their ends to said standards, and having free movement between them, and a series of spring-bolts for engagement with the hanger-arms.
2. In a trousers-hanger, the combination with a pair of upright standards united by a top piece and lower brace, ofa series of doublecrank-shaped swinging hangers suspended from the upper ends of their arms to and between said standards, and each succeeding hanger having arms of greater length than the one above, and a series of spring-bolts for engagement with the hanger-arms.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN O. HYLAND. VVitnessesz' H. G. UNDERWOOD,
' JOHN Ho'rH.
