SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 739,225, dated September 15, 1903.

Be it known that we, FRANCIS EDWARD l ROGERS and EBENEZER HOSKING, iron-workers, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residents of Commercial street, Mount Gambier, in the State of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a-certain new and useful Spark-Arrester, of which the following is a specification.
The essential feature of the invention consists in the affixture of a rotatable screen within or below the funnel of a locomotive or other furnace and so situated and arranged as to be acted upon by the exhaust-current or by other power, such as a supplementary steamjet. The screen may be of size and shape according to requirement of the particular funnel and furnace; but it is always of such shape and proportions that nothing can pass between its edges and the funnel, the whole of the steam and gaseous products of combustion passing through the leaves' of the screen and the sparks being deflected back intothesmoke-box. Thescreen maybeeither immediately within thev base of the funnel or it may be placed slightly nearer the boiler. If within the funnel, the screen is of such size as to approximately fill the opening. When placed nearer the boiler, the screen is of larger size and so situated that the leaves in rotatjas ing approximately cover the opening of the funnel. In the latter case the funnel may be slightly widened a't the bottom to afford room for the screen. v
In order that our invention maybe clearly understood, we will describe the same, with `reference to the accompanying drawings, in

or the space between each frame and the spin- 6c dle is filled by woven wire D of suitable mesh or a perforated plate. -'Tl1e outer edge ofthe `woven wire is secured to the semicircular frame by clamps or rivets, while-its edges at the center are all bound together andv to the central spindle by a wire laceorin other convenieut manner. The outer' edge of` each framehas a lip E projecting at slightly lessl than a right angle from the leaf. This may be produced by a suitable form of angle-iron 7o or by a separate plate riveted thereto., This y return-lip will project backward fromthe leaf when in operation. In the screen shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the angle-iron frames are of semi-oval form; but
otherwise the construction is the same. The spindle of the screen is supported horizontally by bearings H, one at eachv end, which are provided at any convenient position on' the smoke-box or funnel and either inside or 8o outside.
The exhaust or steam-jet pipe must be so situated or formed that the steam is directed toward one side of the screen, thereby causing it to rotate in the direction shown by the v arrows in Figs. 4 and 6. In operation when the 'exhaust or the operating steam-jet strikes against the leaf of the screen it turns it in the direction indicated and, striking the successive leaves, 9o l.causes the screen to revolve rapidly. The
result is that the sparkscannot pass `the rapidly-revolving screen, becauseas they strike the leaves and the 'downwardly-projecting lips they are broken and thrown off the screen into the smoke-box and eectually prevented from entering the funnel.
It will be seen that there is no fixed screen or other obstruction to become choked, and

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of oursaid invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is- A spark-arrester, comprising a smoke-box provided with a cylindrical smoke-stack, an exhaust-nozzle mounted within said smokebox and free to discharge into said smokestack, a revoluble member provided with substantially semicircular screens radially mounted thereupon, said revoluble member being so disposed that said screens are free to successively obstruct the path of discharge
