PATENT ()FFICE.
HENRY W. ROYAL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WELSBACH LIGHT COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHADE-CLIP FOR INCA NDESCENT GAS-BURNERS.
SYECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,110, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed May 14, 1903. Serial No. 157,168. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HENRY W. ROYAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Clips for Incandescent Gas-B urners, of which the following is a specification. 4
Hitherto sl1adeholding clips have been arranged so as to depend from the standards of the chimney-guard with their lower ends free and unsupported. The result of this was that their lower ends frequently sprung inward or downward, and thus-permitted the shade to I 5 fall or pass clear of them.
Objects of the present invention are to obviate the above-m entioned defects and disadvantages and to provide shade-holding clips which while comparatively inexpensive are nevertheless so constructed that they may not yield or spring, even under the influence of the heat to which they are subjected, and which therefore satisfactorily perform their function of supporting shades even though the latter diifer somewhat in size.
' To these and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and
scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shade- 3 5 holding clip embodying features of the invention, and Fig. 2 is an elevational view showing the clips in application to the standards of a chimney-guard.
In the drawings the perforated parallel 40 parts 1 and 2, connected by the part 3, constitute means'for suspending the clip from the standard I- of a chimney-guard 5. For this purpose the standard passes through the openings or perforations, and the part 2 rests '45 upon the ring 6, carried by and fastened to the necks of shades, which may vary in size. As shown, this body portion is inclined outward and in that way compensates for diifercut sizes of the openings in the necks of the shades.
S is a foot extending from the body portion 7 and arranged to rest upon the standard at and in that way. impart strength to the body 5 5 portion 7 and prevent it from springing inward, as it tends to do, under the weight of the shade, and more particularly if the metal of the clip is somewhat heated, as it is likely to be by reason of its position above the burner. The end of the foot maybe recessed, as at 9, for the reception of the standard.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modifications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The combination with the standards and the ring fastened thereto of a detachable clip consisting of a body portion having means for HENRY w. ROYAL.
In presence of-- Gno. W. STONE, BENJ. J. ULLUM.
