Beit known that I, HANS G. GLAUSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fasteners for elevator-doors, so that the opening and closing of the same may be.
controlled in a reliable and effective manner by the attendant; and for this purpose the invention consists of a fastener for elevatordoors which is operated by a spring-actuated handle-piece located in 'a housing upon the door, a vertical latchrod connecting said handle-piece with a sliding gravity-latch at the upper end of the door-,said latch being guided in a suitable keeper and composed of a latch-finger and a latch-hook sidewise of said latch-finger and engaging a hook on the door.
The invention consists, further, of certain details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of an elevatordoor provided with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 isa detail front view showing the operating handle-piece and adjacent parts. Fig. 4. is a vertical-transverse section on line 4 1, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail side .view of the latch and hooks drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 6 is a plan, partly in section, of the parts shownin Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is anend elevation, partly in section; and Fig. 8 is a vertical section on line 8 8, Fig. 6.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates an elevator-door of any approved construction. Said door is hung on rollers a in suitable overhead ways a, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to be readily opened and closed. The door is provided at its middle portion with a rectangular casing a having a flange a forming a handhold. In the housing a is arranged a handpiece h, which is held by a cushioning-spring a in position ready to be beneath the latch-hook b moved sidewise by the hand. The handle is fulcru med at its lower end at a and provided with an arm a, which engages the recessed lower end a lot a vertical latch-operatin g rod a that is guided in a tube a which extends from the casing 0. along the frame of the door A to a latch B at the upper side of the doorcasing 12. The latch is provided with an upwardly-curved latch-finger b and a latchhook 13 the latter engaging with a hook b on the top rail 19 of the elevator-door A, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 5. The latch is guided by a shank b arranged 'at right angles to the latch finger and hook in a keeper b, that is attached to the door-casing b, said shank being of such weight as to exert sufficient gravity action on the latch to insure its reliable action. The hooks b b are provided with curved ends, so that the hook on the door passes readily along the curved face of the latch-hook when the door is placed in closed position. For opening the door the attendant operates the handpiecea by inserting his'hand into the opening in the housing 06*, forcing thereby the handpiece sidewise and lifting the latch-rod a so that the latch is lifted and the hook I) raised clear of the hook b on the door. Simultaneously with the lifting of the latch the door is moved back on its rollers, so that the locking-hooks clear each other, while the latch-rod passes along the latch-finger, so as to clear the same. As soon as the fastening device on the door clears the latch and its hook the latter rests by gravity in lowermost position in the .keeper as far as permitted by a slot or open-.

together with the latch-hook b and latchshank 17 so that the hook b of the door passes The handle-piece it being now released, the latch is permitted to descend, and the latch-hook b thereby engages the door-hook 12 In case the handle 72. is released and the latch-rod a thereby permitted to descend before the upper end of said latch-rod arrives at the latch-finger b on the return motion of the door the rounded forward end of the upturned door-hook b engages the rounded forward end of the downturnedlatch-hook bitherebyliftingsaidlatchhook, together with the latch-finger and latchshank, and passes below and into engagement with said latch-hook.
The latch-finger I) being curved upward causes the descent'of the latch to be a gradual one when the elevator-door is opened, so that said latch is deposited without noise in its lowermost position and no sharp falling of the same takes place. For this purpose also the motion in upward direction of the latch a is limited. This is accomplished by means of the housing a which is of such dimensions that the rear wall I) formsastop or abutment for the handle h, thereby limiting the movement of the same and of the rod a Said rod is permitted by this construction a movement in upward direction of approximately the same extent as the rise of said latch-finger from its lowermost to its uppermost position.
My improved fastener for elevator-doors is comparatively simple in construction and very reliable in action, being operated with great facility by the attendant.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A fastener for elevator-doors, consisting of a movable handle on the door, a hook on the door, a movable latch on the door-casing, provided with a latch-hook adapted to engage said door-hook, a latch-finger 011 said latch,
provided with an upwardly-curved outer end, and a latch-rod connected with said handle and extending into engagement with said latch-finger, substantially as set forth.
2. A fastener for elevator-doors, consisting of a movable handle on the door, a hook on the door, a movable latch on the door-casing, provided with a latch-hook adapted to engage said door-hook, a latch-finger on said latch, provided with an upward ly-curved outer end, a latch-rod connected with said handle, and extending into engagement with said latchfinger, a rest for said latch, and means for limiting the movement of said latch-rod, substantially as set forth.
3. A fastener for elevator-doors, consisting of a fulcrumed and spring-actuated handle, a housing provided with a flanged opening, a latch-operating rod engaged by an arm on the handle, a guide-tube for said latch-operating rod, a hook attached to the upper corner of the door, a gravity-latch provided with an upwardly-curved latch-finger,a hook adapted to be engaged by the hook on the door, and a keeper for the shank of the latch, substantially as set forth.
