PATENT OFFICE.
FRANZ HAAS,-OF PRAGUE, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
ORTHOPEDIC CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,995, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed November 1'7, 1902. Serial No- 131,686. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, FRANZ HAAS, a citizen of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, residing at 6 set which is so constructed that it can be worn without inconvenience to the wearer and can be employed in connection with diderent cases of bodily deformity.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a back view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of a corset constructed according to this invention.
The corset consists of the steel hip-belt a, made in accordance with the anatomical construction of the body and passing completely around the hips. The belt is open in front and for the purpose of being fastened is furnished at one end with the piece Z), which engages in the guide situated at the other end, as well as with straps c, by which it is buttoned over the buttons 0. To this belt a the two side supports 6 and f, which run under the arms, as well as as a back support g, are fastened. To the supports 6 and f other supports 1' and j for the arms are adj ustably attached by means of the screws k. The back part of each of the supports t' and j is horizontal, the front part being curved. To the support for the back pads Z, m, and n are fixed, Z and m being for the right and left shoulder-blades, respectively, and n for the hip-bone. The peculiarly-shaped pads illus trated in the drawings may be moved horizontally in the guides 00 a: by means of the screws y y and in a vertical direction on the support 9 by the screw 2. By means of these pads the deformed parts can be straightened, while the supports 6 f keep the backbone straight, and their parts 11 and j inclose the arms. One end of the support g is firmly connected with the belt a, while the other end, with the corsets, is free and can be con nected with the other parts of the corset.
The front u serves as a support for the fore part of the body and is furnished at the sides with flexible linings 1) in order that it may ofier no hindrance to breathing and will yield to the bodily tension.
The springs in this corset are not curved, but straight.
The combination of the difierent parts by means of the belts is eifected in the following manner: The padslandm are connected crosswise above the arms with the supports j and thy means of the straps 0 and p, provided with buttonholes for buttoning them onto the buttons op, and connected with the side supports 6 and f 'by means of the straps r 4, which are pushed under the steel belt ofthe side supports 6 andfand buttoned onto the buttons 1". The supports i and j are connected together by the straps s, which are buttoned onto the button 3'. The pad n is fixed to the back support 9 and connected with the side support 6 by means of the belt t, which is pushed under e and buttoned onto the button t. The pads land on adapt themselves to the body, grasp the point of the shoulder blade, and inclose the curved part of the ribs. As the pads are only fastened to the back support, they can be drawn tightly against the body, so that the body is straightened. When the crest of the hip-bone projects, the lower pad n serves to hold the bone, so as to prevent it coming out of place.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
