To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ILLIAM H. BEcKErT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detour, in the county of Chippewa and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Governor Attachment, of which the following be instantly closed in event of the breakage or displacement of the belt.
Another object of the invention is to provlde a deviceof this character which may be I attached to any of the various forms of governors manufactured without change in the structure of the governor.
Another object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which may be I adjusted to adapt it to the governor and increase or decrease its power to correspond to the resistance of the governor.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the annexed description and the novel features thereof be specifically pointed out in the claims. 7 The improved device may be attached to any of the various forms of governors operated by an endless belt running over pulleys, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited in the use of the device to any specific form or construction of governor and reserve the right to such modifications and chan ges which I may be found necessary to so adapt it with:
out departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is an end elevation, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partiallyin section, of a conventional form of governor with the improvement applied; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the supporting-bracket detached. Fig. 4 represents a side view of an improved form of highspeed governor in ordinary use with the improvement applied, and Fig. 5 is a plan view in section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4..
In the form of governor illustrated in Figs.
1 and 2'the base 'or valve casing'is indicated at 10, having a column or standard 11, ektending therefrom and provided with the usual form of valve 12 and stem 13, extending through the column.
The governor-balls are shown at 1 1, com nected by the system of levers 15 and rotating sleeve 16, between the column and stem, the rotation of the balls controlling the valve in the usual manner.
A transverse shaft 17 is mounted for rotation in bearings 18 on the casing 10 and provided on one end with a drive-pulley 19 and on the other end with a bevel-gear 20, interengaging asimilar gear 21 on the rotating sleeve 16.
A drive-belt 22 operates upon the pulley from the engine-shaft or other moving part in the usual manner; but as this portion of the device forms no part of the present invention 23, in the lower portion of which atransverse shaft 24. is mounted for oscillation and provided on one end with a relatively short crank-arm 25 and with a relatively elongated lever-arm 26, extending in the opposite direction from the other end, the latter arm having an idler-pulley 27, mounted for rotation on its free end, running in engagement with the belt 22, as shown. The lever-arm 26 is formed in two sections having overlapping ends and providedwith spaced apertures 28 in the overlapping portions, through which clamp-bolts 29 are passed, to enable the leverarm to be lengthened or'shortened 'to correspondingly increase or decrease the leverage, if'required. A
Pivotally'connected, as at 30, to the vertical portion of the bracket is a secondary lever-arm 31, connected at one end by a link 32 to the free end of the crank-arm 25 and with the other end bifurcated and engaging opposite sides of the valve-stem 13 above a stop 33, as shown.
When the governor is operating properly, the belt 22 will support the pulley 27 and arm 26 and hold the smaller arm25 in its downand by means of connecting-link 32 the sec ondary lever 31 will be held in an inoperative position and will not affect the governor or interfere with its action under the influence of the balls 14.
In event of the breakage or displacement of the belt 22 the lever-arm 26 and its pulley 27 is immediately transformed into a relatively long and powerful lever, working upon the relatively short arm 25 and connecting link and lever 31 to cause them to throw the valvestem downward and close the valve 1.2, and thus shut 01f the steam and stop the engine. B y this means the'engine will not run away in event of the breakage or displacement of the governor-belt; but the governor will be immediately and automatically cut out of action in event of such an accident.
In Figs. 4 and 5 an ordinary high-speed governor is shown, with the governor-balls and valve-stem arranged and operating reversely to the governor, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) illustrating the manner in which the improved trip mechanism may be connected to this form of governor. In 'this connection it will be noted that the bracket 23 is modifled somewhat in form to adapt it to the structure of the governor and is secured in place about the base 10 by a clip or strap 34 and nuts 35. In this modification the lever-arm 2G and pulley 27 are supported by the belt 22 in the same manner as in Fig. 1 and 2, and thus prevent the arm 36 from operating the bell-crank lever. Then in the event of the breakage or displacement of the belt the dropping of the lever-arm will rotate the shaft 24 and cause the arm 36 to operate the bellcrank lever, and thus move the valve-stem 13 and close the valve in the same manner as heretofore described in connection with the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Vhile I have thus shown two forms of governor-valves in common use, it is obvious that with slight and immaterial modifications in the form of the bracket 23 and the leverage mechanism between the shaft 24 and the valve-stem the device may be readily adapted to any form of governor-valve now in use wherein a driven belt or similar operating mechanism is employed without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. The combination of a governor -valve having a stem extending therefrom, governorballs mounted for rotation and adapted to control the movements of said valve, a drivepulley connected to impart motion to said balls, a drive-belt operating upon said drivepulley, a primary lever-arm intermediately pivoted and extending by one end over said belt and supported thereby, a secondary leverarm intermediately pivoted and movably connected by one end with said valve-stem, and a link connecting the free ends of said lever arms, whereby the breakage or displacement of the drive-belt will cause the closure of said valve, substantially as described.
2. In a governor, a valve-casing, a valve movably seated in said casing and provided with an extended stem, governor-balls mounted for rotation and connected to control said valve, a drive-shaft connected to operate said governor-balls and provided with a drivepulley, a drive-belt operatively engaging said drive-pulley, a supporting-bracket connected with said valve-casing, a shaft mounted for oscillation upon said bracket, and having a primary lever-arm extending therefrom in one direction over said drive-belt and supported thereby and provided with a crankarm extending in the opposite direction, a secondary lever-arm intermediately pivoted to said bracket and movably connected by one end to said valve-stem, and a link connecting the other end of i said primary leverarm to said crank-arm, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a governor-valve having a stem extending therefrom, governorballs mounted for rotation and adapted to control the movements of said valve, a drivepulley connected to impart motion to said balls, adrive-belt operating upon said drivepulley, a lever-arm extending over said belt and supported thereby, means for adjusting said lever-arm to change its length, and means for connecting said lever-arm with said valve: stem, substantially as described.
