Thus it will be seen that when the saw is arranged in the guides and the said guides properly set in the tubular slotted posts the saw can be quickly and easily adjusted to the desired angle by shifting the hand-lever along the graduated segment. In order to lock the said hand-lever in its adjusted position, I employ a lockingcatch H, which is pivoted in a depending bracket H, extending downwardly from the hand-lever D, and the said catch has an eccentric head H which binds against the under side of the segment B when the forward end 11 of the said catch is thrown down, and in order to normally hold the said forward end in its downwardly-projecting position I employ a spiral spring H, which bears upon the under side of the lever D and upon the upper side of the catch and surrounds the guide post H carried by the said latch. When it is desired to disengage the lockinghead from the segment, it is only necessary to press upwardly upon the end H The hand-lever can then be moved to the right or left until the proper adjustment has been secured, and then by releasing the catch the spring will immediately bind the said head to the segment and lock the catch in its proper position.
As before stated, the guides F and G are constructed to receive an ordinary miter-saw; but in case should it be desired to use an ordinary handsawin connection with my improved construction of miter-box I have devised a detachable frame which can be connected to the blade or body portion of an or-,
dinary handsaw and which will then enable the said saw to be used in connection with my miter-box and will secure as accurate an adjustment and operation as a miter-saw, having the back rigidly and permanently connected to the said blade. This detachable frame I havecshown-applied to the saw in Fig. 1, and in Fig. 7 I have shown the said frame detached, and while various constructions might be employed I prefer to construct the said frame I and the bar I, to the rearward end of which are connected the parallel members 1 binding-screws being arranged at the upper and lower ends of said parallel members. The forward end of the bar I is curved downwardly, as shown, and connected thereto are the parallel members 1*, said members being provided with clamping-screws, so that the plate of the saw can be securely clamped between the parallel members I and I and the bar I will then constitute the back of the saw-frame, which will occupy the openings F and G of the guides. It will thus be seen that the saw K, used in connection with myrhiter-box, can be either a miter-saw 01' an ordinary handsaw.
L indicates a bracket carrying an eccentric lever L, by means of which a block can be clamped upon the strip of material constituting the bottom of the miter-box, which block will serve as a stop and gage to limit the length of the material to be cut.
M designates an extension-back, formed of a yoke crossing beneath the removable base and extending upward at the front and rear of said base. The rear arm of the yoke M is almost as high as the back A and serves as a back-support for the portion of material being out which extends materially beyond the back A, and the front arm of the yoke is provided with a set-screw M for binding engagement with the front margin of the base. The yoke may be movedlongitudinally of and fixed in any desired position on the removable base. It will be understood, however, that these appliances are not absolutely necessary for the proper manipulation of the improved construction of miter-box.
In order to use the box, it is only necessary to clamp the same to a piece of material, place the saw in the guides, and then arrange the guides in their tubular posts. By moving the hand-lever the saw can be adjusted to the proper angle. When it is desired to pack the miter-box away, it is only necessary to remove the saw, unclamp the box from the board or piece of material, and disconnect the hand-lever from the depending end post 0.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple and efiicient construction of miter-box capable of carrying out all the objects hereinbefore mentioned.

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A miter-box comprising a back plate, the graduated segment, clamping means arranged for engagement with a removable base at the ends of said segment, a hand-lever movable upon the segment and the sawguides carried by the said hand-lever.
2. A miter-box comprisingaback plat-e having forwardly projecting arms carrying clamps shaped for engagement with a removable base, a segment connecting said arms, the hand-lever, tubular posts and the guides carried therein.
3. A miter-box com prisinga back plate having forwardly projecting arms, clamping means shaped for engagement with a removable base, parts of said clamping means on the back plate and parts on the extremities of the projecting arms, a segment connecting the said arms, the hand-lever, the tubular slotted posts, the slotted guides, and means for locking the said hand-lever.
4. In a miter-box, the combination of a back plate having forwardly-projecting arms, carrying clamps shaped for engagement with a removable base, a segment connecting said arms, a hand-lever, posts and guides therein carried by said hand-lever and extensionbacks removably, replaceably and adj ustably mounted on said removable base, whereby the back-support of material being sawed in said miter-box may be extended laterally of the back plate. 5. In a miter-box, a saw-guide attachment, comprising the base, formed with a vertical back plate, a segmental graduated front plate and end bars connecting said plates, clamps on said base and arranged to engage and support a block, which block forms the bottom of the box, an arm pivoted at one end on the rear portion of said base and crossing the segmental graduated plate, and saw-carrying posts carried by said pivoted arm.
6. In a miter-box, a back plate having forwardly projecting arms, carrying clamps shaped for engagement with a removable base, a segment connecting said arms, ahandlever pivoted at one end on the rear portion of said back plate and crossing said segment, tubular posts carried by said handlever, guides carried by said posts, a fulcrum projecting from said hand-lever to a point below said segment, a latch pivoted on said fulcrum, and having a curved end portion eccentric to its pivot and arranged 'for engagement with the lower face of said segment and a spring interposed between and impinging the extremities of said hand-lever and latch.
