$PEGIF1CATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 738,883, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed March 23, 1903. Serial No. 149,038. (No mode My invention consists of a simple mechan-- ism, which is hereby denominated a joinerro guard, to be attached to the ordinary machine known as a joinerf in which a long arm made, preferably, of hard wood is so.
adjusted to the joiner by means of a screw and spring as to completely cover the joinerr' knives; and the objects of my improvement are to provide a guard or shield which will keep the rapidly revolving knives of the joiner constantly and completely covered, thus protecting the workman against the den ger of having his hands mangled by the knives, and which will at the same time auto matically uncover so much of the knives as may be necessary whenever a board is run through the joiner. Iattain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 shows a portion of a joinerwith the joiner-guard attached and in position covering the knives of the joiner, the position of the knives being'indicated in dottedlines. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the guard, showing the manner in which it is attached to the joiner. Fig. 3 is a view of one end of the guard, a portion of this end being 5 cut away to show the iron collar and steel spring in position. Fig. 4 is atop view of the joiner-guard with the collar, spring, washer, bolt, and hand-set removed.
'Similarletters refer to similar parts through- 40 out the several views. v
The joiner-guard proper, A, consists of a long narrow fiat arm made, proferably,of hard wood,'having a slot at one end A, the other end being enlarged on the side toward the '45 back of the joiner in an elliptical or circular shape, its edge presenting a continuous curve. lil the circular well-shaped end of the slot A is placed the iron collar Rwhich is just a trifle thicker than the guard A. In one side of the iron collar F is cut a notch, in which is securely 5o titted one end of the steel spring B. The width of this spring should be the same as the thickness of the guard A. An iron washer E rests upon the top of the collar F. An iron bolt D passes through the washer E andcollar F and through a hole in the surface of the joiner G, being screwed in o the hole in the joiner. The washer E and liar F are smooth on the inside and fit loosely around the bolt 1). The hand-set O is placed upon the bolt D and is screwed down till the hand -set press s tightly upon the washer E and the collar F, thus holding the joiner-guard firmly in position, except that the enlarged end is spring-actuated toward the back of thejoiner.
When the joiner-guard is attached to the joiner and is in position, the enlarged rounded end of the g uard presses firmly against the back of the joiner J and completely covers the joiner-knives I, thus protecting the workman against having his hands drawn in any manner into the rapidly-revolving knives I. When theboard- H is placed on the joiner to be pianed off, theend of the board strikes the enlarged rounded end of the guard A and pushes it aside just enough to allow the board to pass through, the enlarged rounded end of the guard A meanwhile being firmly pressed against the'board H by the spring B, thus keeping the knives I constantly covered.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
"in joiners, the combination of'an arm having a curved enlargement at one end and having a slot at the other end through which 85 passes a bolt attaching said arm. to the surface of the joiner, with acollar within said slot to which is fitted spring which actuates the arm toward the back of the joinor, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
if). EORGE A. CATON.
