EXPANDED METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,825, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed November 6, 1902 Serial No. 130,240. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELwYN A. MALLORY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Expanded Metal,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a series of slits which are out or punched in a sheet of metal, whereby the sheet is expanded laterally and converted into a perforated sheet or Web with a series of points or projections on either side for use as metal lath or for fence-panels; and the object of my style and arrangement of slits is to cut the blank sheet so the expansion is made by a positive bending or folding on longitudinal lines without twisting or warping the strips of metal between the definite bends. I attain this object by cutting and bending the sheet metal as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of a sheet of metal cut for bending, showing part of the same expanded; Fig. 2, a section of the same as on line 2 2; Fig. 3, a plan of a variation of the cut, showing part of the sheet expanded; Fig. 4, a section of the same as on line 4 4, and Fig. 5 a section of the same as on line 5 5.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The sheet-metal blank 1 is punched or cut with a series of similar \I-shaped slits 2, located side by side along the sheet, with the intervals 3 between the adjacent free ends of the arms of the slits. The inclination and length of the arms of the slits are varied according to the style of expansion it is desired to make, and the joining of the arms can be angular, as at 4, or curved, as at 5, or made in such other style as may be fancied or desired. Along the side of this series of slits is cut a series of similar in verted-V-shaped slits 6, with the adjacent arms preferably parallel with the first series and the joining of the arms located opposite the interval between the adjacent arms of the first series, and so on, with succeeding series of alternate V- shaped and inverted-V- shaped slits 2 and 6 2 and 6", 2 and 6, 650., respectively, similarly arranged and located as described for the first two series.
After the sheetis cut itis expanded by bending or folding the successive rows of strips formed between the cuts in alternate directions, the bends being on the lines connecting the adjacent ends of the arms of the V-shaped slits, as indicated by broken lines in the drawings. In cutting the slits in the metal sheet I prefer to also indent the same along these lines of bending or folding, the indentations 7 being made in the intervals of the alternate series of slits on opposite sides of the sheet. When this is done, the sheet is expanded laterally by merely pulling or drawing it out by its side edges, for by so doing the sheet will bend or fold along the lines of the indentations without any warping or twisting of the strips between the slits; but it will be understood that these indentations can be omitted and the various folds made by the other means. 7
What I claim herein as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An expanded metal comprising a sheet cut with alternate series of V and inverted-V shaped slits with intervals between the adjacent slits in each series, the sheet being bent in opposite directions on the lines of the intervals in the alternate series.
2. An expanded metal comprising a sheet cut with alternate series of parallel V and inverted-V shaped slits with intervals between the adjacent slits in each series, the sheet being bent in opposite directions on the lines of the intervals in the alternate series.
3. A metal sheet cut with alternate series of parallel \land inverted-V shaped slits with intervals between the adjacent slits in each series, and indented on opposite sides along the lines of the intervals in the alternate series of slits.
4. A metal sheet cut with alternate series of \l and inverted-V shaped slits with intervals between the adjacent slits in each series, and indented on opposite sides along the lines of the intervals in the alternate series of slits.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELWVYN A. MALLORY.
