Description
Patented September 15, 1903.
PATENT OEEICE.
REGINALD D. ALDRICH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPRINKLER ATTACHMENT FOR ROAD-ROLLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,748, dated September 15, 1903.
` Application {iled January 3, 1903. Serial llo. 137.727. (No model.)
` To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REGINALD D. ALDEICH, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Chi- 1 cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprinkler Attachments for Road-Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dey scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being `had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which Y paving and in laying such pavement, particularly in macadamizing, it is necessary or desirable that the road be watered before being 'rolled or rammed, and heretofore this has usually been done by a sprinkling-cart. The objection exists to this that the cartwheels cut up the prepared road and the wheels and horses are apt to dislodge or disarrange the surfacing.
1v objection mentioned and to save time and labor by attaching sprinklers to theroad-` The object of my invention is to avoid the roller supplied by hose connection withany convenient plug or street-main and automatically governed to sprinkle the water be-` fore or behind the roller, according to the forward or ackward movement thereof.
In the accompanying-drawing the figure is a side elevation of a road-roller provided with my improvement. l
Referring specifically to the drawing, 6indicates a pipe carried by the roller and having connection with front and rear sprinklers, (indicated at 6 and 6", respectively.) These sprinklers may be of any'suitable or proper kind and of sufficient size to water the track of the roller. A iieXible section is inserted in the pipe at 6 to accommodate the movement of the front steering-wheel.
Leading to the pipe 6 are a pipe 7 and hose 8, the latter being connected to any conven ient faucet, or street-plug and being of sufficient length to permit the customary extent of travel by the roller at work. At 7fL in the pipe 7 is a stop-cock to shut od the flow when desired.
At the junction of the pipes 6 and 7 a three way cock 9 is placed to supply water to either sprinkler. This cock is controlledl by a connection with the reversing-lever 10 of the engine, being connected thereto by rods 9 and bell-crank 9b, so that when the lever is thrown to go ahead the cock is turned to admit water through the forward sprinkler, and
when the engine is reversed the water is accordingly admitted to the rear sprinkler. Obviously the parts could readily be so arranged as to sprinkle behind the roller instead'of in front thereof, if it were so desired.
The supply-hose S will be dragged along by the roller, and it will usually be found necessary to employ a workman to keep it out of the way of the roller, but even so the device will have great advantages of economy and saving of labor over the practice heretofore. y What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a road-roller and its engine, of a sprinkler carried thereby, means to jointly control the sprinkler and engine, and a water-supply for the sprinkler.
2. The combination with a road-roller and its engine, of front and rear sprinklers carried thereby, a pipe leading tothe sprinklers, and a valve in the pipe connected to a movable part of the engine and controlling the flow to the sprinklers according to the direction of the engine.
3. The combination with a road-roller and its engine, of front and rear sprinklers, a supply-pipe thereto, a valve in the pipe, and a connection between the valve and the reversing-lever of the engine, directing the flow to either sprinkler according to the direction of the engine.
In testimony whereof I afiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REGINALD D. ALDRICH. y
