PATENT UEEICE.
ORLEXINGTON, VIRGINIA.
NUT-L ocK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,660,dated September 8, 1903i. Application tiled December 27, 1902. Serial No. 186,814. (No model.)
`To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatl, CHARLES HENRY CHIT- TUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Rockbridge and State of Virginia, have invented a new and 4 useful N ut-Lock, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to devices for preventing nuts turning backward from the bolts or other structures or members with which they are engaged, more particularly to the nuts upon vehicle-axles, and has for its object to simplify and cheapen the construction of such devices and also to increase the etticiency and operativeness; and the invention consists in certain novel features of the construction,as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims. In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designatingcharacters, Figure' l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective View of the nut. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the screw-stud and locking-latch. l
This device is more particularly applicable to the axles of large lumber or farm wagons, and in the drawings for the purpose of illustration it is shown applied to a portion of an axle and hub of a vehicle of this class, representing the wooden axle end, 1l the skein, l2 the hub-sleeve, 13 the hub, 14 the hubband, and the axle-nut, all of the usual construction. The only change' required to adapt the improved device to the axle and hub is to form a radiating channel 16 in the outer end of the axle-skein 1l and a similar channel 17 in the face of the nut, the two channels adapted to register when the nut is setup into its operative position. In vehicles of this classthe skein 11 is securedin position upon the `wooden portion 10 of the axle by a lag-screw passed through the outer end of the skein, and in applying the improved device this lag-screw (represented at 18) is utilized by forming thereon an enmember 18 and operating against the rear end l larged slotted head l9 and movably connecting into this slot, as by a pivot 20, a latch 21, the free end of the latch adapted to be seated in the channels 16 17 when in their alined position, and thus electively lock the nut fast to the axle-skein, as will be obvious.
A spring 22 will be connected to the screw of the latch to maintain it normally in yieldable engagement with the channels to preventaccidentaldisplacement. By thissimple means a very eective and convenient lock is provided, which will prevent the nut Vfrom turning backward from the skein, while at the same time it is easily releasable when the Wheel is to be removed.
The device may be formed to fit -any vevicle of this class and may be modified in minor particulars without departure from the principle of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with an axle having a threaded extremity and with a radiating channel in the outer end, a nut engaging said threaded extremity and having a` channel adapted to register with the channel in said axle end, a screw-stud inserted into said axle end and having a laterally-extended head, and a latch movably connected in said head and engaging said channels, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an axle having a threaded extremity and with a radiating channel in the outer end, a nut engaging said threaded extremity and having a channel adapted to register with the channel in. said axle end, a screw-stud inserted into said axle l end and having a laterally-extended head and a spring operating to maintain said latch in yieldable engagement with said channels substantially as described. l t
In testimony that I claim the foregoing-as my own I have hereto aftixed my signature Vin the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES HENRY Cl-IITTUM. Witnesses:
