VEHICLE-GEAR.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,? 86, dated July 28, 1903. Application filed December 22, 1902. Serial No. 136,230. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, FRANK E. WILCOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mechanicsburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in, Vehicle-Gears, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is the produ c-.
tion of an improved gear which shall be very simple in construction, comprised of a few parts, cheap to manufacture, easily applied and detached, and which shall be strong and durable and adapted to perform the requisite functions appertaining to a perfect gear.
With this end in view my invention consists in certain novelties of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed. The accompanying drawings illustrate two complete examples and a detail modification of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best modes I have so far devised for the practical application of the principle. 7
Figure l is a section of the axle and axle cap or bed and a view in elevation of the clip, yoke, king-bolt arrangement, head-block plate, and brace. Fig. 2 is atop plan view of Fig. 1, the head block plate being removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1 with the king-bolt removed. Fig. 4 is a Fig. 5 shows front and top views of the cylindrical bolt, also illustrating the recess in the body thereof. Fig. 6 shows side and top views of the Fig. 7 is a modification of Fig. 1, showing the interlocking parts reversed. Fig. 8 shows the upper end of a modified construction of the cylindrical bolt. Fig. 9 is a view of the king or tie bolt.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9, the numeral 1 designates a metallic axle; 2, an axle cap or bed; 3, the clip; 4, the bolt end of the clip; 5, the clip-head with a tapered hole; 6, the wings of theclip bearing upon the top of the axle-cap; 7, the axle-yoke; 8, the perforated front end of the axle-yoke; 9,
a recess to receive a nut; 10, a nut; 11, the rear enlarged and perforated end of the yoke; 12, a recess to receive the edge of the nut; 13, a cylindrical bolt longitudinally perforated;
a 14, a recess in the body of the cylindrical bolt; 15, the edges of the bolt where it is cut away to fit the axle and cap; 17, the cylindrical upper bearing end of the bolt; 16, the tapered upper end of the bolt which fits the tapered hole in the clip-head; 18, the threaded 21, a brace; 22, a frusto-conical brace-head fitting within the recess in the end of the cylindrical bolt; 23, the head-block plate; 24, perforated lugs in the rear of the plate; 25, a recess to. receive the end 17 of the cylindrical bolt; 26, the king or tie bolt; 27, the
head of bolt cut away on one side; 28, a nut on the end of the king-bolt.
lower end of the bolt; 19, a tapered recess in the end of the bolt; 20, alarge hexagonal nut;
Fig. 7 illustrates the invention with the interlocking parts reversed. The numeral 29 designates the cylindrical downwardly-projecting bearing-lug on the head-block plate; 30, a recess in the top end of the cylindrical bolt; 31, the frusto-conical lower end of the cylindrical bolt; 32, a recess in the bracehead to fit the end of the cylindrical bolt, and 33 is a modified form of the cylindrical bolt, having a flange to bear upon the top surface of the clip-head.
The methodof assembling the several parts and elements is obvious and need not be specifically described.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is clear that I have produced an improved gear which is simple in construction, comparatively cheap to manufacture, which fulfils all the conditions set forth as the purpose of my invention, and which constitutes an advance in the particular art.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. The combination in a vehicle-gear, of an axle; a clip provided with a perforated head;
an axle-yoke; and a cylindrical bolt lonlgit'udinally perforated and secured between the head of the clip and the rear end of the axle-yoke.
2. The combination in a vehicle-gear, of an axle; a clip; an axle-yoke; and a cylindrical bolt longitudinally perforated and secured between the head of the clip and the rear end of the axle-yoke said cylindrical bolt having a cylindrical upper portion 16, which fits with in the tapered hole made in the clip-head.
IOO
4. The combination in a vehicle-gear, of an axle; a clip; an axle-yoke; and a cylindrical bolt longitudinally perforated and secured between the head of the clip and the rear end of the axle-yoke; said cylindrical bolt being cut away upon one side to frictionally engage and match the axle or axle and axle-cap.
5. The combination in a vehicle-gear, of an axle; a clip; an axle-yoke; and a cylindrical bolt longitudinally perforated and secured between the head of the clip and the rear end of the axle-yoke; said cylindrical bolt having a bearing 16, a threaded lower end, and nut 20 upon the bolt.
6. The combination in a vehicle-gear, of an axle; axle-clip with a perforated head; an axle-yoke with perforated rear end; a longitudinally-perforated bolt; a brace with a perforated head; a perforated head-block plate; and a king-bolt which latter passes through the head-block plate, longitudinal bolt, and brace-head.
'7. The combination in a vehicle-gear, of an axle; axle-clip with a perforated head; an axle-yoke with a perforated rear end; a longitudinally-perforated bolt located between the clip and yoke; a brace with a perforated head; a head-block plate with a perforated lug; and a king-bolt; the upper end of the longitudinally-perforated bolt and the head-block plate interlocking.
8. The combination in a vehicle-gear, ofan axle; an axle-cli p with a perforated head; an axle-yoke with a perforated rear end; a longitudinally-perforated bolt; a brace with a perforated head; a perforated head-block plate; and a king-bolt; the lower end of the cylindrical bolt and head of the brace interlocking.
9. The combination in a vehicle-gear of an axle; clip with a perforated head; axle-yoke with perforated rear 'end; a longitudinallyperforated bolt threaded at the lower end and having a cylindrical bearing at the upper end; a nut 20; a perforated head-block plate; a king-bolt; abrace-head; and a nut on the end of the king-bolt uniting the several elements of the gear.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' FRANK E. WILCOX.
