DETONATING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 738,585, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed December 22, 1902. Serial No. 136,121. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL E. VVENZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Improvement in Detonating Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of referencemarked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to secure in a detonating toy improved means for holding the caps in position, such as will enable the strip containing said caps to be fed into position conveniently, to provide an improved :0 construction of such toys, and to obtain other advantages and results, some of which will be hereinafter referred to in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved detonating toy and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figirre 1 shows in perspective a toy of my improved construction subsequent to the act of firing and with a strip of caps in position. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken longitudinally and centrally of the toy.
In said drawings, 2 indicate the side plates or'pieces of the frame of my improved detonating toy, and 3 is the body part'supported thereby and which is preferably in the form of a cannon, as shown. Each side plate 2 forms at its bottom edge an extended bearing 4 to engage the ground or floor, and lateral lugs 5 may be provided adjacent to said bottom edge, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive fastening-screws, if desired.
The two side-plates 2 2 and the cannon or bod; 3 are all cast, preferably, in two cast- 56 ings, the division being vertically and longitudinally of the body, so that one side plate formed, against which explosive caps maybe placed, a perforation 8 extending from the face of the said anvil to the interior of the cannon to receive smoke. From the lower edge of said anvil arms 9 project upward, one near eachedge of the anvil, to hold the cap. Said arms 9 lie a little distance away from the anvil, so to provide a slideway or space into which a strip 10 of caps may be slid edgewise. This strip can then be fed along by hand as needed, and at the same time the engagement of the arms 9 9 is suflicient to hold the strip during explosions. A hammer 11, adapted at its upper end to engage the said anvil, is mounted at its lower end upon a cross-shaft 12, having its ends supported by the side plates 2 2. A spring 13, coiled upon said shaft and engaging at its ends the hammer and frame 2, respectively, serves to normally throw said hannner against the anvil. To retract said hammer-and automatically release the same for its forward stroke, 1 have provided the means shown in my prior application, Scrial No. l28,I,=l3 i,.liled October 22, 1902, comprising an operating-lever 14, fulcrumed at its lower end upon one side plate 2 of thc fram'c, as at 15,and, provided at its inner side with transverse rcces es or grooves 16 17, adapted to receive the e d of alinger 18, projecting laterally from lhc hammer, The lower groove is inclined at its bottom forwardly, and'ithus-adaptcd .to pass the lin ger end from behind, but to carry the, hammer with itself on a backward swing untilg said finger, sliding on the lever, arrives at the upper groove 17, through which it escapes for a forward stroke, all as described in detail in my prior application above referred to.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a detonating toy, a body portionproviding at its end an anvil having a vertical face and having parallel to the face of said anvil a narrow transverse capway closed-at its bottom. and open at its top, a spr ng-controlled hammeradapted to engage said anvil,
and an operating-lever adapted to swing of said eapwiiy on the opposite side thereof across the plane of said capway. from the said open side.
In a (leimmii11gi0 ,*,'a body portion pro- In testimony that I claim the foregoing I Viding at its end an anvil having a vertical have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of 5 face and having parallel to the face of said .I)eeember, 1902.
