SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 738,420, dated September 8, 1903.

To a, whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CHARLES DIL- LON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gas-Generator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in means for generating gas from oil, and is adapted for use with either gasolene or with heavy petroleum, such as is found in Southern California.
The device is especially adapted for the manufacture of fuel-gas on a large scale and provides for the storage of same in suitable tanks after leaving the generator.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a diagrammatic view, parts being shown in section.
In carrying out my improvement I employ an oil-tank A, a generating-cylinder B, and a storage-receptacle C. It is understood, of course, that in practical use the tanks A and C will be larger than the cylinder B and may be of any capacity within certain practical limits. A horizontal boiler D is provided, mounted on suitable supports D, and within this boiler, mounted on suitable arches B, is the generating-cylinder B. A water-supply pipe E opens into one end of the boiler D. A steam-pipe F leads from the steam-space of the boiler and may lead to any steam-pump or other engine that may be in use around the plant. A safety blow-off valve G is positioned on the upper part of the boiler, having a weighted arm G, a link G and a rod G connecting the link G2 with a link G which in turn is connected to the stem of a shut-off Valve in the pipe H, which pipe leads from the oil-tank A to the generator B, passing through an end wall of the boiler D. A hand-valve I is positioned in the pipe H exterior of and adjacent the boiler D, by means of which the flow of oil may be regulated. The pipe H opens into the lower part of the cylinder B at one end, and at the opposite end two pipes J J lead from the upper and lower parts of the cylinder, respectively, and connect with a pipe J leading to the storage-tank. Valves L L are located in each of the pipes J J exterior of the boiler, and a valve L is positioned in the pipe J between the pipes J J, all three valves being operable by hand. Plugs M M are inserted at the union of the pipes J and J and the vertical and horizontal portions of the pipe H. Beneath the boiler is a pipe N, having a plurality of burners, said pipe being supplied with gas from the storage-tanks.
The operation of my device is as follows: Water is admitted to the boiler D and the burners N lighted. Oil or gasolene is then admitted into the cylinder, the valves L L being closed. As the water becomes heated the oil will vaporize, and the valve L being opened the gas will ascend to the storagetank. It will be observed that the location of the cylinder B is such that there will be a circulation of hot water or steam around and in contact with all parts of the cylinder and the adjacent parts of the pipes leading to and from the cylinder. Should there be an excess of steam in the boiler, the valve G will lift and automatically cut off the supply of oil, as it will be observed that with a heavy steam-pressure in the boiler gas would be generated very rapidly, and if fresh oil were being admitted gas might be formed faster than it could be conveyed to the storage-tank.
It is understood that under a normal heat the gas will be formed only as rapidly as it can be conveyed away. By means of the weight the safety-valve can be set for any pressure desired, this pressure varying according to the capacity of the machine and the pipes leading from the gas-generating chamber. As soon as the safety-valve opens the attendant is supposed to reduce the heat under the boiler either by cutting out some of the burners or reducing the amount of fuel supplied to same. 7 To prevent accidents owing to carelessness on the part of the attendant, the arrangement at G2 G G is provided, and the supply of oil remains cut off until the degree of heat within the boiler is reduced within proper limits, thus causing a reduction in the pressure, when the supply of oil is again automatically turned on.
Where heavy petroleum-oils are used, such as the California oils, more or less sediment would be deposited in the cylinder; but by taking out the plugs at M and M and opening the valves L I and connecting the end of a steam-pipe to M the cylinder B can be cleaned out.
It will be seen that I have a very simple and efficient device of the kind described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In a gas-generator, the combination with a boiler, of a cylinder therein spaced from the walls of the boiler, an oil-tank, a pipe leading from the oil-tank through the boiler to the cylinder, pipes leading from the cylinder through the boiler, a gas-tank connected to the last-named pipes, at water-supply pipe to the boiler, a steam pipe leading from the boiler and means forheating'the boiler.
