CHARLES N. PYE, OF STOUGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,770, dated September 1, 1903.
Application filed June 25, 1902.
To aZZ whom. it *may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES N. PYE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stoughton, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lasts, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of novel, simple, and effective means for strengthening and increasing the pressureresisting qualitiesof the heel part of a last at a small cost and in a convenient manner.
Lasts are subjected to but slight strain at their fore parts; but substantially all crushing, twisting, or distorting strains to which a last is subjected at different times are concentrated upon or directed to the heel part and tend to so injure the last as to render it worthless. Various devices have been made to reduce in greater or less degree or to obviate such damage to the last and comprise thimbles or socket-pieces ofdifierent kinds, metallic comb'plates, anvil-heels, 85c. but in many instances they increase the cost of the last, are heavy, and very inconvenient to apply.
In my present invention I have provided means for distributing over the heel part of the last the various crushing or twisting strains to which it may be subjected and for resisting such strains adequately and eifectively without injury to the last, while at the same time adding but little to the weight of the last or its cost of production and with no increase in the inconvenience or cost of applying the invention to the last.
As will hereinafter appear, the resistance to vertical or crushing pressure upon the heel part of the last acts longitudinally and transversely of the heel part.
The various novel features of my invention and its practical advantages will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation and part section of a last having one embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line a: (L, Fig. 1. Fig. 3
Serial No. 113,120. (No model.)
socket b is formed in the heel portion intersecting the thimble-hole b. The socket is made in a convenient and rapid manner by a circular cutter of the requisite diameter and thickness in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. As shown in the drawings, the thimble-hole b is made, and preferably so, of greater depth than the depth of the socket b in order to receive the thimble or spindle socket of requisite length.
One embodiment of the pressure resisting and distributing member is shown separately in Fig. 3, and it comprises a flat and preferably elongated head a, its outline conforming substantially to the top b of the heel portion of the last, its squared end a abuttingagainst the transverse shoulder 12 of the last, Fig. 1, said head having a hole a, forming a continuation of the bore of the tubular thimble or spindle socket a This thimble, closed at its lower end, as at a Fig. 2, is of sufficient length to receive the supportingspindle of the jack or other device which sustains the last when in use, and the thimble depends from the head a.
On the under side of the head I have shown a segmental web a, extended longitudinally of the head along its median line and conmeeting the head and the thimble, as shown, said head, thimble, and web being made of metal and preferably by casting in a suitable mold. The web is of sufficient thickness to fit snugly in the socket b in the heel portion of the last, with its curved face a resting on drawings it will be manifest that vertical pressure or crushing strains .upon the heel portion of the last when in use will be resisted by the head a, the closed end of the thimble a and the curved face of the web a the parts named resting upon the solid -material of which the last is made, so that have herein shown two strong pins d, preferably'made of steel, which are inserted in holes drilled transversely through the heel portion of the last, behind and in front of the thimble, as herein shown, and passing through holes a in the web a Not only do the pins act as retaining devices, but they also serve to distribute the strains transversely to the heel portion and additionally resist pressure applied to the head a.
It will be observed that the tools requisite to adapt a last for the application of my novel pressure resisting and distributing member are a drill or auger for the thimble-socket b, a smaller drill for the holes for the pins 01, and a circular saw or milling-cutter of the requisite diameter and width of cutting-face.
Ihave herein shown one practical embodiment of my invention, and I have not attempted to show or describe the various modifications or changes thereof which might be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my in- Vention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A last having its heel provided with a metallic pressure resisting and distributing member comprising an elongated head, and an integral segmental webinserted and wholly inclosed in and extended longitudinally of the heel of the last and having its curved face resting upon the solid material thereof, the head resting upon and being supported by the top of the heel.
2. A last having its heel provided with a metallic pressure resisting and distributing member comprising an elongated head, and a substantially semicircular, integral web inserted in and extended longitudinally of the heel of the last and having its curved face seated directly upon the solid material thereof, the head resting upon and being supported by the top of the heel.
3. A last having its heel provided with a metallic pressure resisting and distributing member comprising an elongated head, and an integral substantially semicircular web inserted and wholly inclosed in and extended longitudinally of the heel of the last and having its curved face resting upon the solid material thereof, the head resting upon and being supported by the top of the heel, and a retaining device for said member, extended transversely through the heel and in engagement with the Web.
4. A last having its heel portion provided with a vertical thimble, a flat, elongated head integral therewith and resting upon the top of the heel, and a segmental web joining the head and thimble and extended longitudinally of the heel portion at opposite sides of the thimble, the solid material of the heel portion contacting with and supporting the curved face of the web.
5. A last having its heel portion provided with a vertical thimble closed at its inner end, a fiat, elongated head integral therewith and resting upon the top of the heel, and a segmental Web joining the head and thimble on opposite sides of the latter and extended longitudinally of the heel portion, the solid material of the latter contacting with and supporting the curved face of the web, and a retaining device extended transversely through the Web and the adjacent material of the heel ortion.
6. A last having its heel portion provided with a vertical thimble-hole and a longitudinal, intersecting semicircular socket, and a pressure resisting and distributing member inserted in the heel portion, said member comprising a thimble, an attached fiat head to rest upon the top of the heel portion, and a longitudinal segmental web to enter the socket and having its curved face seated upon the correspondingly-curved bottom of the socket.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a pressure resisting and distributing member for lasts, consisting of a head, an integral thimbio, and a substantially semicircular web connecting the opposite sides of the thimble and the head and extended longitudinally of the latter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES N. PYE.
