To ALL WHoM 1T MAY coNcEEN:
Be it known that I, JAMES CAMPBELL, of Peoria, in' the county 'of Peoria, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Millstones; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a pair of millstones, showing my improved device for introducing air between them to cool and carry off the steam.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section through the curb in the line :r a1, showing a top View of the stones.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful arrangement of a device for conducting fresh air between a pair vof millstones, and expelling it from the curb, for the purpose of cooling the stones and carrying away the vapor arising from friction when they are" grinding grain.
A is a bed-stone, B the top stone or runner, C the spindle, and D the curb of a run of millstones. The
runner B has a cap-piece, B, tted on it, in the eye of which isset a thin metal flange or shell, a, upon which' restsa leather or other soft and elastic washer, c, that encloses and lies close to the side of a feed-tube, shown in red, which passes down through the ange a, thus preventing any access of air around the feed-tube. The
-runner B is hung upon the bail el, which serves also as the driver of the stone, and is placed in the top side of the runner, below the cap piece B. Three or more holes or pipes, e e, are made through the cap-piece B', from the top to the bottom, communicating with corresponding channels e e, in the top of the runner B, that lead to the eye of the stone; and at the upper openings of the pipes e e are pla'ced hoods g g, facing so that they shall catch the air when the stone runs, and force it down through the holes e e and the channels e e into the eye of the runner, and thence, with the grain, down between the stones, an outlet being eut off bythe washer c, around the feed-pipe, so that the air cannot escape in that direction.
Around the inside of the curb D, a circle of leather or other soft substance, forming a rim or ange, h, encompasses the runner, and, filling close to the side, prevents the escape ofthe air through the top of the curb, and it is forced out of two or `more vent-holes, m m, that are made in the sides of the curh, rwhich vent-holes may have pipes connected with them to lead the vapor and hot air-'away from the curb, to prevent the condensation of steam upon thc outside of it.
The currents of air thus forced to pass through the stones when grinding ,mingle with the meal, and carry oii' the heat generated by friction, and the vapor arising from the grain, thus preventing clogging ofthe stones, and enabling them to do more work in the same time, and delivering the meal or iour in a drier state to the bolt, which keeps clear and bolts more freely.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hoods g g, and the pipes e e, passing through the cap-piece B', the channels-e e in the runner B, the washer c, the langc L, and the vent-holes vm m in the curb D, all arranged and operating as and for the purpose herein described.
JAMES CAMPBELL. Witnesses:
GEORGE SCHMUCK, JOHN J. BARRY.
