SOFT-TREAD HORSESHOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,695, dated September 1, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OHAUNOEY HART BEARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky 5 and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soft-Tread Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled X0 in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in soft-tread horseshoes, and has for its object to provide means by which the cushion may be readily attached to the shoe or removed therefrom.

A further object is to provide an interchangeable cushion, so that when worn on one side it may be placed on the opposite side of the shoe.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is aplan View of the shoe with one cushion removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a horseshoe the sole of which is provided with two undercut grooves or channels 7, in which the elastic cushions 8 are held. These are preferably formed of rubber. The channels conform to the curvature of the shoe and each extends along one branch of the shoe from the heel to the toe calk 6. They do not meet; but their ends are separated from each other for a short distance, approximately the width of the toe-calk. This does not interfere with the grip of the toe-calk on the ground. The forward ends of the channels are closed, as indicated at 7 The cushion 8 takes the shape of the channel and projects therefrom. The inwardly-extending flanges 7 of the channel engage the cushion, which is grooved on both sides to receive the same and retain the cushion within the channel. The cushion isv slipped into the channel from the heel end and is held against withdrawal by a heel-call: 0, fitting the rear end of the channel and secured therein by a bolt 10, passing through the calk and the walls of the channel. The flanges 7 U do not extend to that portion of the channel which is occupied by the calk. To remove the cushions, it is necessary only to remove the block 9, which is readily done by taking out the bolt 10. The cushions can then be drawn out of the channel and renewed, or if one side is worn more than the other they may be interchanged. As they are flexible, they will take the shape of either channel.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. A horseshoe each branch of which has a channel, a cushion in each channel, and means for holding said cushions therein, comprising a removable heel-calk secured in the end of each channel between the walls thereof and against the end of the cushion, substantially as shown and described.

2. A horseshoe having a flanged channel in the sole thereof, a cushion in the channel, and a removable heel-call: in the end of the channel between the walls thereof and against OIIAUNOEY HART BEARDSLEY.
