lATENTED SEPT. 1, 1903.
N. HUGKINS. KNEE REST FOR MILK FAILS.
APPLICATION FILED P313. 7. 1903.
K0 MODEL.
iatented September 1, 1903 PATENT OFFICE.
NOAH HUOKINS, OF OBERLIN, OHlO.
KNEE-REST FOR MILK-PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 737,629, dated September 1, 1903. Application filed February 7, 1903- Serial No. 142,373. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH HUCKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oberlin, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knee-Rests for Milk-Pails; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relatesto knee-rests for milkpails; and the invention consists in a substantially right-angled rest, arm, or support constructed to hold the milk-pail in a tilted position and adapted to be engaged with the ears thereof, all substantially as shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 showsaperspective View of a milk-pail and its rests in the position in which they appear in use by a person engaged in milking. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged section of a pail and one of my improved rests engaged thereon, as seen also in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section of a pail corresponding substantially to Fig. 2, but with the rest down in suspended position, as occurs when it is out of use. Fig. 4 shows the parts in the same relative position as in Fig. 1, except that it gives a direct end view of the rest, showing its bend transversely.
A represents a milk-pail of any suitable kind, and B the bail hooked in ears or earplates E on the pail, as usual, and which have eyes 2 at their top, with which the bail is engaged. The said ears or ear-plates E also have the usual offset or shoulder 3 about opposite rim 4: of the pail, so as to bring the said eye somewhataway from the said rim, and my new and improved rest C is engaged over the said eye and when not in use hangs upon shoulder 3 at the side of the pail, as clearly seen in Fig. 3. The said rest 0 is of peculiar and novel construction, in that it is a substantially right-angled part, or rather a part with two angles, so as to bring its engaging portion 0 well to one side of the direct line of its supporting portion 0, which is intended to rest upon the knees of the milker, Fig. 1. The said engaging portion 0 base. substantially T-shaped or keyhole-shaped slot, with the stem thereof lengthwise and long enough to pass the rest down over eye 2 and the transverse portion 6 of said slot of less length than the greatest width of eye 2, so that when the rest is raised to supporting position its extremity rests on rim at and its slot locks ,on eye 2. This will make the said rest 0 practically rigid with the pail and hold the rest in a substantially horizontal position, about as seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, when it is in use. Both rests or supports are rights and lofts, but alike in all other particulars, and when they are raised, as shown, for use they support the pail in a forwardly-tilted position, which they are intended to do. It is well known by experienced milkers that it is really necessary to tilt the pail more or less toward the cow, and it is also practically necessary that the pail should be held fixedly in this position during the progress of the milking. Hence this angular and otherwise peculiar construction of rest 0, which carries the supporting portion thereof laterally from its engaging portion the full length of the middle portion 0 of the rest, which facilitates or gives the tilting position desired. In addition to this, however, the rest is formed with a bend between its extremities in the cross portion 0 which is calculated to throw the extremity a down at an inclination in respect to the supporting end 0, so that while the rest will thus be caused to lie flat upon the knees it will also tilt the pail about as wanted. In this way also I provide a novel construction of rest which can be placed on milk-pails as they are now commonly made and found in use, and no special construction of pail is required to use it. Once on the rest remains in position until purposely removed.
What I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a milkpail rest having its ends connected by a portion substantially at right angles to both ends and provided with a substantially T-shaped slot in its engaging end, substantially as described.
2. Asa new article of manufacture, a milkpail rest having its ends in different planes lengthwise and a connecting portion between said ends bent to give the engaging end of the rest an inclined position in respect to its supporting end, and the said engaging end est width of said ears and inward from the adjacent edge of the rest, whereby the said rests are locked on said ears and bear upon the rim of the pail, substantially as described.
Witness my hand to the foregoing specification this 31st day of January, 1903.
NOAH HUOKINS.
