Description
UNITED STATES Patented August 25, 1903.
ALFRED H. THIEME, O'F SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAPER-HANGERS SIZE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,529, dated August 25, 1903.
Application filed December 27,1902. Serial No. 136,865. (N0 p cimens) To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ALFRED I-I. THIEME, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of I-Iampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PaperJ'langers Size, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the present improved paper-- hangers size is to produce a new size for the purpose indicated which is comparatively cheap and easily compounded, susceptible of being molded into cakes of suitable size, readily soluble in the ordinary manner for use, and which will not deteriorate in the lapse of any reasonable time.
My paper-hangers size consists in the following ingredients combined in proportions, reckoned in bulk, as follows: ground glue, forty per cent. 3 sugar, fourteen per cent. water, fortyone per cent; isinglass, four and one-fourth per cent. alum, one-fourth per cent; salicylic acid, one-fourthpercent.; antiseptic material, one-fourth per cent. These ingredients are all dissolved together with water and boiled for about twenty minutes, then allowed to cool and harden, and may then be molded into cakes or cut up into cakes from the mass.
I11 the selection of the ingredients I prefer to use of the isinglass about two and oneeighth per cent. each of red Russian isinglass and white Russian isinglass. For the preservative equal parts, together amounting to one-fourth per cent, of oil of cloves and oil of Wintergreen may be used advantageously, but any other equivalent preservative may be employed if preferred.
This paper-hangers size aside from being one of entire utility and fitness for its purpose is susceptible of more convenient use than paper-hangers size, which ordinarily is marketed in cans, for the reason that this size, assuming as it does in the manufacture thereof the form of a heavy gelatinous body, permits that the cakes of any size for use in the covering of a given area may be wrapped in paper and distributed among the workmen.
The proportions of the ingredients may be varied somewhat from those given Without materially altering the character or efficiency of the size.
Having thus described my improved size, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described size composition containing glue, sugar, water, isinglass, alum, salicylic acid, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described size composition consisting of glue, sugar, Water, isinglass, alum, salicylic acid, and an additional preservative material, substantially as described.
3. The herein-described size composition consisting of ingredients in proportions as follows: ground glue forty per cent.; sugar fourteen per cent. water forty-one per cent. isinglass four and one-fourth per cent. alum one-fourth per cent. salicylic acid one-fourth per cent. and an essential oil one-fourth per cent, substantially as described.
Signed by me, at Springfield, Massachusetts, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED H. TI'IIEME.
