PATENT OFFICE.
BALlNG-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,516, dated August 25, 1903.
Application filed January 30, 1903. Serial No. 141,157. (No model.)
1b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, XVALTER O. SPURGEON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milroy, in the county of Bush and State of Indiana, have invented a newand Improved Baling-Press, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in baling-presses for hay or light material, a main object being to provide in connection witha press a simple means to facilitate the applying of the binding-wires-that is, to provide in connection. with a baler a device by means of which the operator standing at one side of the machine may apply the wires, thus reducing the time usually required in the operation.
I will describe a baling-press embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a baling-press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, on the line 00 of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a portion of one of the wire-guides employed. Fig. 4 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 2, and Fig. is a detail perspective view showing the wire-feeder.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body portion of a baling-press of the ordinary or usual construction. Arranged on one side of the body are two frames 2 3, these frames being mounted to slide on rods 4 5, attached to the body of the press. The frame 3 is designed to have a movement relatively to the frame 2, so as to adjust the feeding of the wires, as will be hereinafter described. The frames are moved apart by means of springs (l, surrounding the rods 4 5 and pressing against the adj aoent sides of the two frames. The frame 3 is drawn toward the frame 2 by means of a cable 7, attached at one end to said frame 3 and passing around rollers 8, 9, and to an operating-lever 11, mounted on a crossbar-l2,extended acrossthe baling-press from an upright 13. Carried by the frames is a series of wire-guides arranged one above the other as clearly indicated in Flg. 1. Each wire-guide consists of two tubular telescopic sections 14 15, and each section consists of an upper part 16 anda lower part 17, these two parts being hinged together, as indicated at 18 and 19. The section is tapered, and its free end extends inward, so as to pass between the bars of the press-body, so as to direct a wire 20 through the cross-slot in the usual block 21. The said wires are fed from spools 22 at the opposite side of the machine, the wires from the spools passing through channels in blocks 23. The section 14 of each wire-guide is mounted on the frame 2, while the sections 15 are mounted on the frame These sections 15, however, have a slight movement toward and from the body of the press. Therefore their curved ends are connected by means of plates 24 with a vertical bar 25, which is connected to the end bar of the frame 3 by means of springs 26. The springs 26 of course draw the curved ends of the guides away from the press-body. As a means for moving them into engagement with the press-body or between the bars levers 27 28 are mounted to swing on the frame 3 and have curved inner ends which engage against the bar 25. From the outer ends of these levers a draw line or cable 29 extends over pulleys 3O 31 to a connection with an operating-lever 32, mounted on the cross-bar 12.
As a means for raising the upper swinging portions of the guide members 14 and 15, levers 33 34 extend from the upper portions of the members 14, the opposite levers being connected by cross-bars 35, and these crossbars are connected one with another by a vertical bar 36. Similar levers 37 38 extend from the swinging portions of the sections 15, and opposite levers 37 38 are connected by a cross-bar 39, the several cross-bars being connected by a vertical rod 40. These several levers arepivoted to the frames. The levers 38, however, are provided with slots through which fulcrum-pins pass, so as to admit of the inward and outward movement of the curved ends of the sections 15, as before mentioned. The lower eross-bars and 39 are connected to a draw line or cable 41 by means of branches 42 43, passing, respectively, over rollers 44 45 on the frames 2 and 3. The ca ble 41 then passes around pulleys 46, 47, and 43 to a lever 49 on the cross-bar 12.
pulley 57 to an operating-lever 58.
At the inlet end of the sections let of the wire-feeding tubes are wire-feeding rollers and 51. The roller 50 is mounted in fixed bearings; but the roller 51 is designed to swing relatively to the said roller 50, so that the wire can be released. This roller 51,as here shown, has hearings in a yoke 52, mounted on a shaft 53, having bearings in a sleeve 54, and from the end of this shaft 53 an arm 55 extends. From the arm 55 a cable 56 extends over a These several levers, it will be noted in Fig. 4, are held in their adjusted positions by pawls carried by the levers and engaging with curved racks.
I11 the operation the person having charge of the baling will pass the several wires through the channels in the blocks 23 and thence between the feed-rollers. The feed-rollers 50 are kept in constant rotation by means of a flexible shaft 59, driven by a motor of the machine. Of course the frame 3 will be adjusted with relation to the frame 2, so as to bring theoutlet ends of the guide-tubes into line with the channels in the blocks 21. hen the proper length is passed through, the operator will sever the wires near the spools and connect the ends. Of course before this is done the feed-roller 51 is released, so that it may fall by gravity, and the proper lever is operated to raise the vertically-movable portions of the guide-tubes, so that the wires will be readily drawn out of the same. After placing the wires the bale is forced out of the machine in the usual manner and a new section or bale is moved into place for wiring. a
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a baling-press, of a wiring device, comprising guide -tubes arranged at one side of the press, means for directing the wires across or through the press, and feeding devices for the wires.
2. The combination with a baling-press, of a wiring device, comprising frames adjustable lengthwise on the press at one side, wireguides carried by said frames and comprising tubular telescopic sections, each section having a movable or swinging upper portion, and
means for feeding the wires through said guide-tubes.
The combination with a baling-press, of a wiring device, comprising two frames movable along one side of the press and adjustable one relatively to the other, means for causing the adjustments, Wire-guides carried by the frames and consisting of tubular telescopic sections, having swinging upper portions, the outlet ends of the tubes being mounted to swing toward and from the press, and means for feeding the wires through the guide-tubes.
4E. The combination with a baling-press, of a Wiring device, comprising two frames, rods attached to the press and on which said frames are mounted to slide, wire-guidesconsisting of tubular telescopic sections carried by the frames, means for moving one of said frames toward and from the other of said frames, means for causing the inward and outward swinging motion of the outlet portion of the guide-tubes, and means for feeding the wires through said tubes.
5. In a wiring device for a baling-press, a Wire-guide consisting of two tubular telescopic members havingupperportions mounted to swing on the lower portions.
6. Ina wiring device for a baling-press, the combination with wire-guide tubes, of feedrollers, one of said feed-rollers having fixed bearings, and the other of said rollers being mounted to swing.
7. The combination with a billing-press, of a wiring device, comprising frames, rods on one side of the press on which the frames are mounted to slide, springs arranged between the frames for moving them apart, means for drawing one of said frames toward the other of said frames, sectional wire-guide tubes carried by the frames and having swinging upper portions, and means for simultaneously swinging the several upper portions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER O. SPURGEON.
