SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,601, dated March 31, 1885. Application filed March 11,1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be tknown that I, JOHN W. NADELHOFFER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Joliet, inthe county of Will and State oi'Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Barbed Vire, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view on the top of the machine. Fig. 3 is a plan view on the top of a single section of the endless traveling bed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a single set of barbbenders for pinching the barb on the respective strand-wires as they appear detached from the machine. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross'sectional view of the machine on line a; of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow immediately in front of one of the sets of barbbenders. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a section ofthe lower strand-wire and a barb, showing the barb as it appears applied to said wire. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a section of the two strand-wires and of a barb ap'- plied thereto, showing the iinished product of the machine. Fig. 8 is a side view of a single set of barb-benders, of a barb, and a crosssection of the lower strand-wire, showing the position of the bendersw'hen they have applied the barb to the strand-wire w; and Fig. 9 a similar view showing the position of the benders at the instant they have finished applying the barb tothe two strand-wires.
This ,invention relates to certain improvements in wire-barbing machines, whereby several barbs are in the process of being applied to the strand-wires at the same time7 commencing a new one at one end each time one is fnished at the other and enters the twister-frame, and it consists in a suitable frame or body supported by suitable legs, which frame supports a pair of notched wheels at each end, over which an endless jointed `traveling bed is stretched and propelled by means of the extending pintles of the jointed or hinged sections, which pintles lie in the notches of said wheels, each section of the traveling bed being furnished with means for attaching a barb, such as is shown in Fig. 5, to the strand-wires.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main frame of the machine, mounted on legs and lprovided at each end with a pair of notched wheels, E E', on the shafts S and S, respectively.
D is a jointed endless traveling bed, having the pintles D' of its joints adapted to lie in the notches D2 of the wheels E and E to rotate or propel the said bed. The shaft S is so arranged in its bearings or boxes that it can be moved away from the opposite shaft S by a set-screw, to stretch and tighten the bed over 'said wheels.
Power is applied to the machine by means of a belt on pulley P on the throat of the twister-frame, as shown in Fig. l, and a bevelpinion, V', on the end of the twister-frame meshes into a similar one on the inner end of shaft Z', and a sprocket-wheel, V,on shaft Z connects with sprocket-wheel V3 on shaft S by the chain V2, and as the pulley P rotates, the bed D is thus caused to travel in the direction of arrow 2. Pulley P2 is a loose pulley on which to run the belt when it is desired to Stop the machine. The strand--wires VV W are drawn across the machine by their frictional contact with the operative parts, and are delivered to the twister and spooler, (not necessary to be shown,) and trave-l at the same speed at which the bed D travels, so that the barbing mechanism of each section can place on its barb while it and the wires travel along together. Strand-wires WV and T are guided to the center of the bed through eyelets in the arm y, the wire XV coming iu immediate contact with the bed, while wire W is held a short distance off or above, and does not come in contact with the Vbed D until it has reached about the center of the bed, and not until after the barb has been applied to wire XV in the form shown in Figs. 6 and 8, when it is guided p or conducted down by the guide W2, (shown in Figs. l and 2,) so it will lie in the crotch between the two prdds looking at Fig. 6. The sides A form supports or ways for the pintles D to travel on and support the bed D as it travels across the top of theframe, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 5. Each section ofthe bed D is provided with a cutting-die, d', adjustable by means of proper set-screws, and intended to operate in conjunction with a stationary cutting-die, d, above in the head H, for the purv pose of cutting off the barb-wirel b as it is fed in over each section of the bed. Fach such IOO section is also pro vided with two pairs of barbbenders, m and m and n and a, as shown iny Figs. 4, 5, 8, and 9, to pinch on the barbs on the strand-wires, and also a presser-foot, X, to hold down the 'strand-Wires while the barbs are being pinched on. The presser-foot X' has a tail-piece, X, which rides on the bar a to elevate that end and bring the presser-foot X down onthe wire W as. each section comes to the topl of the frame, and thus hold the said wire firmly until the barb has been placed on, as shown in Figs. 2, 8, and 5, when the said guide-bar a is cut away, as shown atc in Figs. y2 and 5 and by dotted lines in Fig. l, so that the tail-piece X can fall and permit the presser-foot X to be raised by means of springs J, so that the wire W above can drop in between the two prods of the barb at the time the barb is in form shown in Figs. 6 and 8. After the wire W is thus placed in between the two prods, as stated, the guide-bar a is so formed as to raise the tail-piece X' again and bring down the presser-foot X on the wire W until the prods of the barb 'can be pinched and bent over it in the form shown in Figs. 7 and 9, when the tail-piece X runs off the guide-bar a to release pressure of the foot X on the strand-wires, so that they can enter the twister-frame to be twisted together in the ordinary way. The barb-benders m m and a n are caused to open and close by means of their arms or handles traveling in channels a2 in the concave bed a, which channels are so formed as to open and close the barb-benders to attach the barbs on the strand-Wires in the manner stated. rlhe guide-bed A2 extends along the under side of ,the frame A to properly guide the arms of the pinchers so they will not get out of place and come in contact with the other parts of the machine. Proper friction-rollers o'are placed on the extending arms of the barb-benders to run in the channels cito lessen friction. The barb-benders mm are so formed as to catch and hold the barbs as they are cut loose, as shown in Fig. 4, which consists in forming, projecting lugs on their rear edges for the loose barb to lie against until it is pinched on the strand wire NV, as shown inFigs. 6 and 8,when the frictional contact of the barb on the wire holds the barb in proper position for the barbbenders n n to catch and complete the attachment of the barb.
The manner of operation of the parts to place on a barb is substantially as follows zv First, after the barb has been fed in and cut off both pairs of barb-benders begin to close, moving about half of the Way they finally are to move or close, when barb-benders n a stop and barb-benders m m continue to close until the barb is pinched on the first wire, W, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8. Both barbbenders then stop closing until the second wire, W, is reached and is conducted into the crotch between the two prods when they are in the position shown in Figs. 6 and 8. Then barbbenders m and 'In' open, leaving barb-benders n and a to close, pinching the prods on over the second wire, W', leaving the barb on the two wires in the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8. After the barb is thus finished, the form of the guide-channels immediately cause both pairs of barb-benders to open and permit the barb thus formed to pass on out of' the machine. As the sections ofthe traveling bed D are duplicates and provided with the same set of barb-benders, a description of one will answer for all. It will be seen that each section of the bed D as it is passing along the top of the machine, isplacing on a barb, so that several barbs are in the process of being placed on at the same time without stopping the bed or machine. rlhe feed-rollers VR R feed in the barb-wire b continuously over each section as needed. Any kind of a feed may be used that will answer the purpose. These feed-rollers are supported on the standards R2, and are continuously rotated by means of the countershaft F,which connects the roller-shaft F and shaft S by means of a pair of miter-gears, g and g, at its lower end, and a suitable pair of spurgears at its upper end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. As soon as the barb'is severed loose from the barbing-wire, it lies on the ends of the benders m m, as shown in Fig. 4, in front of a projecting lug, and is carried along with the mov- .ing bed D by means of said benders, and also v bythe frictional contact of the barb with the wire W by means of the pressure of the of the presser-foot X. After the barbs are pinched on Wire WV, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8, their contact or grasp on it secures them thereto, so that they cannot thereafter become displaced in its passage on outof the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I 'claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
1. In a wire-barbing machine, the endlessl jointed bed D, having the extending pintles 4D,mounted on the notched wheels E E, each section of the bed D being provided with a presser-foot, X, cutting-died, and barb-benders m m u n', said benders having frictionrollers on their lower or inner ends, in combination with the cutting-die d, guide-bed a', having channels a2, and means for feeding in the barb-wire b and for guiding, spooling, and twisting the main strand-wires W W, as and for the purpose set forth.
