REEL ATTACHMENT FOR MINE-LOCOMOTIVES.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KENNETH RUSHTON, a citizen of the United States, residingin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Reel Attachments for Mine- Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in mechanism for reeling a cable attached to an electric mine-locomotive, so that the locomotive can be run from the main line, having a. trolley-Wire to a side line or gallery in which a trolley-wire is not used.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple construction of reel mechanism for the cable and to provide means for winding the cable when the locomotive is returning to the main line. This object I attain in the following manneigreference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of an electric locomotive illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, partly in section, of one side of the locomotive. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4. is an end view looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3.
A is the frame of the locomotive, which may be of the ordinary type of electric locomotive, having pedestals a a for the boxes 1) of the axles B B. On these axles are the usual traction-wheels b.
Hung to the axle B is a motor-frame D, and the armature-shaft of this motor is geared to the axle in the ordinary manner.
Mounted directly above the axle B in the present instance is the reel E, constructed as shown in Fig. 3, having a shaft E, adapted to bearings f in pedestals F, secured to the frames A of the locomotive, and mounted on the shaft E are two disks 6 e, having a sheathing e and a spool c upon which the cable 11 is wound. This cable passes over a guide pulley a, on the frame of the locomotive and also over a guide-pulley (1 elevated some distance from the body of the locomotive, as shown in Fig. 1. On the shaft E of the reel is a friction-wheel E and on the rod G is a friction-wheel g, which is so arranged that it can be moved into contact with both the friction-wheel E on the shaft E and one of the traction-wheels b on the axle B, so that the cable can be wound upon the spool when the locomotive is backing on the siding to the main track. The rod G is mounted in suitable bearings h h on the frame and is coupled to a spring-box H, having a spring h, through which passes a rod G, guided in suitable bearings, and having a handle g within easy reach of the operator. The rod G has in the present instance a series of notches 9 so that any one of these notches can engage the pin a on the frame of the locomotive. By moving the rod G in one direction the friction-wheel g is drawn in contact with the friction-wheel E on the shaft E and in contact with one of the traction -wheels I), so that motion is imparted to the reel E from the axle through the friction-wheel g, and the cable is wound upon the reel as the locomotive moves in one direction. The frictionwheel Q can be held against the two wheels by allowing the notched rod to engage the pin a As soon as the rod G is released the friction-wheel g will move out of contact with the other wheels and the cablecan be unwound from the reel.
On the shaft E" is a contact-wheel K, having a contact-surface 70, against which bears a spring-brushj, mounted on a bracket J, and from which extends a wire 7", leading to the motor. Any suitable contact device may be provided for transmitting the electric current from the cable to the motor.
My invention is used especially in connection with electric mine-locomotives, but may be used on other types of locomotives where a cable is in service without departing from the main feature of my invention.
By the use of this invention in mines a track may be laid in the main gallery with suitable overhead trolley-wire, against which the trolley-wheel on the mine -locomotive bears; but in the side galleries temporary tracks may be laid without the trolley-wire, and if the locomotive is run from the main line to one of the galleries all that is necessary is to fasten down the trolley-pole and clip the end of the cable to the trolley-wire by any suitable fastening, then allow the cable as the locomotive travels in the side gallery to unwind from the reel, the cable being insulated, so that it can trail on the ground, if desired. When the locomotive has traversed the gallery to the point desired and it is Wished to reverse the locomotive, the frictionwheel 9 is thrown into engagement with the friction-wheel E on the drum-shaft and with one of the traction-wheels on the axle B and the drum is turned, winding up the cable as the locomotive travels toward the main galery.
It will be understood that while I have shown the reel mounted directly above the axle B it may be located at any convenient point on the locomotive. For instance, it may be placed at the front or rear of the 10- comotive if the height of the gallery is such as not to allow for the reel to be placed on top, as shown.
I claim as my invention- .1. Thecombinationofalocomotive,anaxle, traction-wheels thereon, a reel, a shaft for said reel, a friction-wheel on the shaft, a sliding bar having bearings permitting longitudinal motion of the same, a friction-wheel carried by said bar arranged to be thrown in to frictional contact with the friction-wheel on the reel-shaft and one of the tractionwheels, with means for operating the sliding bar, substantially as described.
2. Thecombination ofa locomotive,an axle, traction-wheels thereon, a reel, a shaft for said reel, a friction-wheel on the shaft, a sliding bar, a friction-wheel carried by said bar arranged to be thrown into frictional contact with the friction-Wheel on the reel-shaft and one of the traction-wheels, a handled bar, a spring-box connecting the handled bar to the sliding bar, and a spring within the box, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a mine-locomotive, of the axle, friction-wheels, a reel mounted on the frame of the locomotive, means for driving the reel from the axle, said means including a bodily-movable wheel constructed to operatively connect said two members, with a longitudinally movable bar attached to said wheel, said bar having a portion constructed to yield to a greater or lessextent when force is applied to the rod, substantially as described.
