Be it known that I, Nus D. LnviN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Locomotive Cable-Keeling Mechanism, of which the following is a'specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawm Y This invention relates to electric locomotives of the type provided with reels for winding and unwinding electric conductor cables.' Locomotives of this class are now well known and are especially adapted for use in coal and similar mines to enter side entries and rooms which are not provided with trolley wires or other permanent conductors. In operation the conductor cable is secured to a trolley wire or other conductor, and current is supplied through the cable to cause the locomotive to advance into a side entry or room. As the locomotive moves forward, the cable is automatically unwound from the reel. When the locomo tive returns, current is still supplied through the cable and the cable is automatically rewound upon the reel.
The object of this invention is to provide improved actuating and controlling devices for the reel. With this object in view, the invention consists in the arrangement of parts and in the structural features which are fully set forth inthe following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings which forma part of the specification' I have shown those embodiments of my `invention which I now consider preferable, but it will be understood that modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents, as a whole7 a locomotive which may be of any of the ordinary forms. The locomotive shown is provided with the usual axles and track wheels and is driven by motors 2, 2. At one end of the locomotive are the `usual controlling devices such as the brake wheel 3 and the controller 4. At the other end of the locomotive there is located the cable reel mechanism which will now be described in detail.
`Referring especially to the constructions in Figs. 1 to 4, 5 represents a main reel frame which is bolted,` or otherwise secured, to the main locomotive frame. 6 represents the reel which comprises a center 7 preferably made up of wooden disks and metallic side flanges 8,8. The parts ofthe reel are held together by means of the through bolts 9, 9. The reel center is recessed at its ends` and in the recesses are secured hubs 10 and 11 which are secured to short stub shafts l2 and 13.A `One of the stub shafts, as for in stance, 12, is mounted in a metallic bearing 14 on the frame 5; the other shaft 13 is mounted in a bearing 15 which is supported on the frame 5 by means of a block 16 of insulating material such as wood.
17 is a bracket extending horizontally from the frame 5. A Mounted upon this bracket is a motor 18. A controller 18 is provided for this motor. The motor is pro vided with a horizontal shaft 19 carrying a pinion 20. Mounted above the motor, pref erably upon the frame thereof, is a horizontal shaft 21 and a driving gear 22 which meshes with the pinion 20. Also secured to the shaft 21 is a sheave 23 adapted to receive and engage with an endless rope 24. This rope also engages with a sheave 25 secured to the end of one of the beforementioned stub shafts, as for instance 12.
Mounted in the'frame 5 below and at one side of the reel is a shaft 26 which is preferably stationary. p Pivoted near thel end of the shaft which is adjacent the sheave 25 is a lever 27 which extends diagonally upward and which carries at its upper end a pulley 28 which is arranged to engage the rope 24 to tighten it. Also pivoted upon the shaft 26 at a point adjacent the lever 27 is an upstanding arm or lever 29. At the upper end of the arin 29 is a brake shoe 30 which is arranged to engage the periphery of the sheave 25 when the arm 29 is moved. The arm 29 may be moved by means of a lug 31'1on' the lever 27 which engages with ascrew 32 which extends through a threaded aperture in a lateral projection on'the arm '29.'-By adjusting the screwT the position of the arin 29 relative to the lever 27 may be regulated.

Mountedin a suitable guideway which extends parallel to the shaft 42 is a carriage 46 which is provided to engage with the double threads ofthe shaft 42 and to be moved by them backward and forward along the shaft. The cable is led in between the guide pulleys on the carriage 46, and if provided with two" conductor wires," one of these isvconnected with the hub 10 and the other with the hub 11. From the hub 10 electrical connectionis established through the shaft 12 and the bearing 14 to the metallic parts of the locomotive and to the ground. From the hub 11 connection is established through the brush 49 to the motors 2,2 and 18.

2. In a cable reeling mechanism for electric mine locomotives, the combination of a reel on the locomotive frame, a cable connected thereto at one end and adapted to be connected at the other end to a stationary conductor, a power shaft mounted closely adjacent to the reel, alined rope sheaves on the shaft and the reel respectively, a relatively short frictionally acting rope on said sheaves, a rope tightener, a friction brake adapted to directly engage the reel sheaves, means for applying manual power to press the brake without fixed limit against the reel sheave to optionally increase to any desired extent the retarding of the unwinding movement of the reel and simultaneously moving the tightener away from the rope, and means for holding the brake stationary after manual adjustment.
