TRANSFER-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,297, dated August 25, 1903.
7 Application filed March 24, 1902. Serial No. 99,656- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMORY A. TRUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Transfer-Binders, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of loosesheet binders comprising a pair of sheet-embracing boards, one of which carries posts that pass through the other movably applied thereto and clutches which are adapted to engage said posts, whereby the boards are held to confine the loose sheets placed between them.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a perspective view of my binder. Fig. II is a detail top view of a portion of the binder. Fig. III is a cross-sectional view taken 'on line III III, Fig. II.
1 designates the bottom board of the binder, having a flexible hinge at 2 and supplied with a pair of posts 3, having notches 4 at'their upper ends. Y
5 designates the top board, having a flexible hinge 6 and provided with apertures through which the posts 3 are adapted to pass when the binder-boards are assembled.
7 designates clutches that are applied to the posts 3 at one end and are adapted to grip said posts, while their opposite ends rest upon the surface of the rear portion of the top binder-board 5 when swung thereonto after the clutches have been placed in gripping engagement with the posts 3. The clutches 7 are of spring material and are provided with apertures 8, that receive the posts 3, the apertures being preferably rho'mboidal or oval in shape, as seen in Fig. II. Each clutch member is depressed at its post-gripping head, as
seen at 9, so as to present two opposing edges of the aperture 8 of the clutch to the post to which it is applied at-varying angles in order ber and is provided with tongues 10, that may be grasped by the fingers of a person using the binder for the purpose of swinging the clutches out of operative position after their application to the posts 3. In applying each clutch it is swung into the position shown by full lines in the drawings and depressed to lower it on its post to the extent necessary to cause itto properly grip the post at the desired location, pressure thereon being continued until the end of the clutch-tail that rests upon the top board occupies the position seen in Fig. III. When the clutches are to be released, their tails are swung rearwardly into the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. II, and as soon as the tails pass ofi'of the top board of the hinder the gripping engagement of the clutches with the posts 3 is broken, thereby permitting of their removal from the post and freeing the top board of the binder.
I claim as my invention- Thecombination with the bot-tom and top boards of a binder of the class described, and
a post fixed to said bottom boa'rd'and passing through said top board, of a spring-clutch having a depressed gripping-head provided with an aperture and by which said post is engaged, and a single long tail to'bear upon said top board when said gripping-head'is lowered in engagement with said post, substantially as described.
EMORY A. TRUssELL.
