Description

3M 0041 to a PATENTED AUG. 25, 1903.
J. WRIGHT. FOOT ATTACHMENT. 'AP-PLIOATIOK FILED JUNIllB, 1903.
H0 MODEL.
r azmm .UNITED STATES Patented August 25, 1903..
JOHN WRIGHT, on HART, MICHIGAN.
FOOT ATj'l'ACH M ENT.
SPECIFIGATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,189, dated August 25, 1903.
. Application filed June 16, 1903. Serial No. 161,736. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, JOHN WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hart, in the county of Oceana and State of Michigan, have liably-efficient means whereby the operator tain novel features of. combination and conmay more easily perform the operation of spading or shoveling the earth or lifting a fork-load or shovelful of any substance which he desires to remove; and with-the foregoing object in view my invention consists of cer struction of parts, the preferred form'whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of' this application, and in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my invention complete as applied to use upon the foot of the operator. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my invention removed from the'shoe, showing the strap or securing means by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of my invention as presented in Fig. 2 with the straps removed.
For convenience in designating the various details of my invention and cooperating accessories numerals will be employed, the same numeral referring to a similar part throughout the several views.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate branches which comprise the main or body portion of my boot or shoe attachment, said branches being adapted to lie under the soleof the shoe and extend rear; wardly to'or near the instep portion thereof,
branch 4:, the free end of which is slightly curved upward, whereby the recesses 5 on each side ofthe U-shaped member 3 are provided, said recesses 5 being designed to more effectively cooperate with a fork, as by having the tines thereof rest therein, whereby I prefer to form upon each side of the U- shaped member 3 the laterally-extending thefork will be held against lateral move- Inent.
The branches" 1- andv 2 are connected together by the members 6 and 7, both of which are of sufficient length to extend beyond said members land 2, the free ends thereof being slightly curved downward, as indicated by the numeral 8, whereby the foot will be held against slipping.
In order to removably secure my improved attachment to the foot of the operator, I provide the double ring-like members 9, one ring of which isdesigned to extend loosely over the curved terminals 8,while the other ring member is designed to receive a suitable lacingstrap 10, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1 and as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The strap 10 being provided. with a suitable buckle 11, it follows that a single strap will be found sufficient, inasmuch as the same minals 8the attachment will be found very excellent and efficient as an ice creeper, whereby the foot of the person will be held against casually slipping in any direction, while the upwardly-curved extension 3,-with its laterally-extending branches 4, will prove a great assistance to "a person using a shovel or fork, as in digging in the ground where it is desirable to lift and turn a portion of the soil, it being obvious that the curved extensions 8 will take into the soil and prevent the foot slipping away from its position as a fu1- crum for the fork or spade. If preferred, the terminals 8 may be pointed to more reliably insure against slipping.
The various parts of my invention may be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled in their operative positions, and While I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts deemed necessary in carrying out my invention I desire to comprehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as fairly falling within the scope of my invention.
Believing that the construction and manner of using my invention have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hereindescribed foot attachment con1- prising the members 1 and 2 terminating z their forward ends in the U -shaped upwardly and rearwardly curved member 3; laterally-extending branches carried by said U-shaped member; connecting-bars uniting the members 1 and 2 and having downwardly-curved terminals and suitable means to removably connect the attachment to the foot whereby a fulcrum-point Will be provided upon which to operate a spade, fork or the like, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I ai'fix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN VVRIGIIT.
