SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patient No. 737,166, dated August 25, 19,03.

T a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-A
Beit known that I, FRANK E. SMITH, a citizen of the UnitedStates ,of America,'and a resident of Webster City, Hamilton county,
Iowa, have invented a new and useful Office- Tickler, of which 4the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved filler for ofce-ticklers or officeles indexed for reference to future business from day to day.
My-invention consists in the construction of a filler for ofce-ticklers composed of guidecards indexed to the months and days thereof numerically expressed and subguide-cards indexed to the days of the week, the arrangement being such that any visible designation of a week-day will register or indicate with the corresponding numerical. designation of the day of the month and the indication of the month in which such day occurs.
My invention consists, further, in the filler for oice-ticklers composed of guide-cards indexed to months andthe days of the month numerically expressed, said indications appearing on opposite faces and adjacent the long margins of said cards, and subguide-cards indexedto the days of the week and registering with the indications of months and days of the month on the other guide-cards.
My inventionconsists, further, in the construction, arrangement, andl combination `of elements hereinafter setforth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated" by theaccompanying drawings, in which-'- Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating my improved device. Fig. 2 is a face View of one of my new guide-cards. Fig. 3 is a reverse face view of the guide-card shownin Fig. 2.
This invention relates to that type of devices illustratedby Letters Patent of the United States No.377,335,granted to me January 31, 1888, and in the present drawings vI show the same box 10, having alongitudinal partition 11 near itsfront wall but an ydesiredy form of holder or. casing may be employed as is found most convenient for a given line or business.
Guide-cards 12 are provided, in this instance thirteenin number, and preferablyare mounted in andlongitudinally of the holder. Of
course when a holder of different relative dises-a1 no. 118,977.5. (No man.)
to the bottom of the holder and parallel with the front wall thereo f. The guide-cards 12 are provided with indexes Y13, 14., 15, and 16,
mension from that shown' is 'employed the y guide-cards would be positioned accordingly, 'but preferably approximately perpendicular preferably adjacent the long margins of said cards and designating the months and some of the days of said months,as illustrated. The
four indexes on each of the guide-cards compass' opposite sides of the long margins of said card and each index preferably issubdivided, as shown, into six days of the month. Each index refers to a month dierent from the month referred toby any other index on the same cardfor instance, the indexv 13 (arranged for the beginning of year 190,2) reads Dec 30, Dec. 31, Jan. 1, Jan. 2, Jan. 3, Jan. 4; the index 14 reads Sept 29, Sept. 30,
Oct. 1, Oct. 2, Oct. 3, Oct. 4; the index 15 reads A Mar. 31, Apr. 1, Apr. 2, Apr. 3, Apr. 4,'Apr. 5, and the index 16 reads June 30, July 1, July 2, July 3, July 4, July 5.
VThe d-ates representing legalholidays or other days on which business generally is 'suspended would be printed on'the guide-cards in a different-color ink, preferably red, except Sunday which in each instance is omitted as not being a business day.
Subguide-cards 17 are provided and formed with tabs or projections 18on their upper edges bearing letters indicating a day of the week lfor each card.V Any common and well-known form of notching ortabbin g the margins of the subguide-cards 17 may be employed. I prefer to employ the subguide-cards 17in groupsl j of six, one card in each group indexed to one business day, as shown, and five or. more groups of such cards interposedwith the main guide-cards 12, one group between two4 main guide-cards. The indexes of the subguidecards would read, as shown, Monday, Tuesday, ,Wednesday Thursday, Friday, Saturday/A7 and 'correspond with the adjacent visible index of a main guide-card 12. Sincea main guide-card 12 is providedrforV each week, by applying indexes of four business weeks on each card and utilizing thirteen cards, and only ve groups of subguide-cards 17 are provided, 1 have arranged a pointer or indicator 19, which may be an ordinary wire paper-fastener, removably and replace- I oc ably and interchangeably mounted on o ne or another of the main guide-cards and, as shown, indicating the space into which the front group of subguide-cards are to be put as used.
In practical use, commencing with the cards as illustrated, on Tuesday, December 31, 1901, the front subguide-cardindexed Monday is removed into the space immediately in front of the pointer 19. Card after card is removed from the front group until Monday, January 6, 1902, and placed in front of the pointer, and on the latter date the front main guidecard 12 is removed and inverted and replaced at the rear of the rearmost main guide-card. Inverting the guide-card brings index 15 into the position formerly occupied by index 13 at the front of the top margin of the card as positioned in the holder and in succesion for use When reached by removal of all cards preceding it. The removal of the front main guide-card 12 reveals another group of sub-` guide-cards registering with another set of dates or index on the margin of the second main guide-card. i
I gain a material advantage in putting four indexes on each of the main guide-cards and eliminating three-fourths of said guide-cards in respect of my former invention and at the same time combining the months and days of the month in the indexes. Another material advantage is found in the provision of the subguide-cards indexing the days of the Week adjacent the index of the fractional parts of the month.
I claim as my invention- 1. A iiller for oiiiceticklers, composed of guide-cards indexedto months and the days of the month numerically expressed, said indications appearing on opposite faces and adjacent the long margins of said cards, and subguide-cards indexed to the days of the Week and registering with the indexes of months and days of the month on the first guide-cards.
2. A filler for oftice-ticklers, composed of guide-cards indexed to months and the days of the month numerically expressed, said indications appearing adjacent all the long margins of said cards, and subguide-cards indexed to the days of the Week and registering with the indexes of months and days of the month on the first guide-cards.
Signed by me at Des Moines, Iowa, this 21st day of May, 1902.
FRANK E. SMITH.
