SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 737,002, dated August 25, 1903 Application filed February 20, 1903. Serial No. 144,176- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. MoGuIN- ass, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and '5 State of Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looms, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to looms,and more particularly to the reversing mechanism of the pattern-chain and of the take-up andlet-oif rolls. In the operation of a loom it is often necessary to reverse the pattern-chain a certain number of picks to find a filling-thread which I5 is broken. It is also necessary to reverse the take up and let -olf rolls a corresponding amount. Heretofore ithas been customary for the operator to reverse the pattern-chain until the mispick is found and then to reverse the driving-shaft intermediate the system of gears of the take-up and let-oif rolls to cause a reverse movement of said rolls, said movement being intended to correspond with the reverse movement of the pattern- 2 5 chain-that is, for, each partial revolution of the pattern-chain barrel (there being a partial revolution for each pick) there must be a corresponding partial revolution of the takeup and let-off rolls. It is difficult in revers- 0 ing the pattern-chain barrel and the take-up and let-01f .rolls independently, as is customary, to make the amount of movement of each correspond-that is, the same number of picks.
It is very desirable in order to avoid any imperfection in the fabric woven on the loom, and particularly in the case of velvet and similar fabrics, that in reversing the patternchain and the take-up and let-off rolls to find a mispick of filling. The amount of the reverse movement of the pattern-barrel and of the take-up and let-off rolls should exactly correspond, and also the forward movement of the same after themispick is found, preparatory to starting up the loom.
The object of my invention is to provide a supplemental mechanism intermediate the pattern-chain barrel and the driving-shaft for the system of gears of the take-up and let-off rolls, so that on the disconnecting of the upright shaft of the loom from the driven part of the loom and on the drawing out of the reverse-key in the system of gears for operating the pattern-chain barrel in the ordinary way the movement of the upper cyl- 5; inder-gear and through intermediate connections the reverse movement of the patternchain barrel will simultaneously cause the reverse movement of the take-up and let-off rolls, and also 011 the pushing in of the reverse-key the movement of the pattern-chain barrel will simultaneously cause the forward movement of the take-up and let-off rolls, said movements corresponding exactly-that is, representing the same number of picks of filling.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my improvements, as will be hereinafter fully described.
I have onlyshown in the drawings sufficient parts of a loom for weaving velvet or similar fabrics with my improvements applied thereto to enable those skilled in the art to which myinveiition belongs to make and use same.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an end View of "a part of a loom side and loomarch on the right side of a loom, showing my improvements applied thereto and in their normal position during the operation of the loom. The loom arch and head are shown turned around onequarter revolution to show a side View of my improvements thereon. Fig. 2 corresponds to Fig. l, but shows my improvements in their opposite position during the reversing of the pattern-chain andthe let-off and take-up rolls. Fig. 8 shows, on an enlarged scale, a detached front view of the plate, operating disk or wheel, and two levers, to be hereinafter described. I
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is the 0 loom side orframe, on which are bearings for the gearing 2 (shown by broken lines) of the pile-warp let-off rolls, said gearing driven by a worm 3 on the driven shaft- 4, mounted in bearings 5 on the frame 1, and having at its front end a hand-wheel 6 in the ordinary way. Asecond worm You the shaft ldrives, through a system of gears and pinions 8, (shown by broken lines,) the take-up roll 8.
All of the above parts may be of the ordiroonary construction and operation in the class The upright shaft 13 is driven from the crank-shaft or some other part of the loom through bevel-gear 14 and a second bevelgear 15, (shown by broken lines,) and through bevel-gear 12 communicates motion to the shaft 4 to cause the let-oft" and take-up rolls to rotate in a forward direction when the bevel-gear lO is in mesh with the gear 12. The bevel-gear 14 is loose on the shaft 13 and is clutched thereto or unclutched through the clutch mechanism 16 in the ordinary and wellknown way to cause the shaft 13 to revolve with the bevel-gear 14 or to allow said shaft to revolve independently of said gear.
Upon the upper end of the upright shaft 13 is fast a bevel-gear l7, meshing with the bevel-gear 18 onthe lower cylinder gear-shaft and also the bevel-gear 19, meshing with the bevel-gear 20 on the upper cylinder gear-shaft 20 in the ordinary way.
The pattern-chain-cylinder shaft 21 is operated through gear-wheel 21 and intermediate connections from the lower cylinder gear-shaft in the ordinary and well-known way and has fast on its projecting end a disk or wheel 22, having in this instance eight surfaces or projections 22 thereon corresponding to the number of grooves or recesses for the pattern-chain bars in the pattern-chain cylinder.
A vertically-moving plate 23 has a longitudinal opening 23' therein to receive the pattern-chain-cylinder shaft 21, which extends through said opening and acts as a guide for the plate 23. On the upper end of the plate 23, above the disk or wheel 22 and in the path of rotation of said wheel, is pivoted a lover or dog 24, with a rounded surface 24 on its free end extending in the path of and to be engaged by a projection 22 on the disk or wheel 22. A spring 25, attached at one end to the lever 24 and at its other end to a side extension 23 on the plate 23, acts to hold the lever 24 in its normal position against the stop 26 on the plate 23. On the lower part of the plate 23, on the opposite side of the disk or wheel 22, is pivoteda second lever or dog 27, having a rounded surface 27 on its free end to be engaged by a projection 22 on the wheel 22. A spring 28,attached at one end to the lever 27 and at its other end to a side extension 23", acts to hold the lever 27 in its normal position against a stop 29 on the plate 23. (See Fig. 2.)
To the lower end of the plate 23 is attached the upper end of a connector or rod 30. The other end of said rod 30 is pivotally attached to one arm of a three-arm lever 31, loosely pivoted on a stud 32 on a stand 33. Another arm of said three-arm lever 31 is provided with a pin which extends into an annular groovein the hub 10' of the bevel-gearlO, and the third arm of the three-arm lever 31 is provided at its end with recesses or notches to receive a rounded projection 34 on a lockinglever 34, pivoted at one end on the stand 33, and having attached to its other end a spring 35, which is also attached to an extension 31 on the three-arm lever 31.
From the above description, in connection with the drawings, the operation of my improvements will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. When it is desired to reverse the pattern-chain to find a mispick of filling and to simultaneously turn back the take-up and let-off rolls, the bevel-gear 14 on the upright shaft 13 is unclutched from said shaft in the ordinary way and the reverse-key (not shown) of the driving mechanism intermediate the lower cylinder-gear and the pattern-chaincylinder is drawn out to cause a reverse motion of the pattern-chain cylinder and its shaft 21 in the usual and wellknown way. The shaft 20 of the upper cylinder-gear 20 is rotated by a hand-wheel 20" in the usual way and rotates the'upright shaft 13, and through intermediate mechanism (not shown) the pattern -chain -barrel shaft 21 and the disk or wheel 22, fast thereon, are caused to rotate in the reverse direction, or in the direction of arrow Ct, Fig.

The rotation of the wheel or disk 22 will cause a projection 22 thereon to engage with the roll 27 on the'end of the lower lever 27 and move said lever to the right against the stop 29 and cause the plate 23 to move down and through rod 30 rock the three-arm lever 31 and move the sleeve (carrying the two bevel-gears 10 and 11) longitudinally on the shaft 4 toward the front of the loom and cause the bevel-gear 10 to be disengaged from the bevel-gear 12 on the shaft 13 and the bevel-gear 1]. to be moved into engagement with the bevel-gear 12, as shown in Fig. 2, and through the revolution of the upright shaft 13 and of the gear 12, above described, the shaft 4 is moved in the opposite direction, and the take-up and let-off rolls are moved backward or in the reverse direction. The locking-lever 34 holds the three-arm lever 31 in its adjusted position. (Shown in Fig. 2.
After the pattern-chain and the take-up and let-off rolls are reversed the number of picks required to find the mispick the reverse-key of the mechanism which drives the patternchain is pushed in and thepattern-chain barrel moved in its forward direction, causing a projection 22 on the disk 22 to engage with the roll 24 on the upper lever 24, as shown in Fig. 2, and cause the plate 23 to move up and through the rod 30 rock the three-arm IIC lever 31 and move the sleeve 9 on the shaft 4, causing the bevel-gear 11 to move out of engagement and the bevel-gear 10 into engagement with the bevel-gear 12 on the upright shaft 23 and cause the let-off and takeup rolls to be moved in the opposite or forward direction until the proper point is reached, when the bevel-gear 14 is clutched to the upright shaft 13 and the loom put into operation.
The advantages of my improvements will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that on the reverse movement of the pattern-chain barrel there is through my intermediate mechanism a simultaneous corresponding reverse movement of the let-off and take-up rolls, and on the forward movement of the pattern-chain barrel there is a simultaneous corresponding for- Ward movement of the take-up and let-off rolls, thus preserving always their relative positions and preventing any imperfections in the fabric.
It will be understood that the details of construction of my improvements may be varied, if desired.
Instead of the disk or Wheel 22 shown and described any equivalent device may be used to move the levers 24 and 17, if preferred.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a loom, the combination with a rotatable disk having projections thereon,a shaftintermediate the gearing of the take-up roll and let-off roll and said take-up roll, and let-off roll, a worm on said shaft for driving the gearing of the take-up roll, a second worm on said shaft for driving the gearing of the letoff roll, and a sleeve mounted on said shaft to rotate therewith, and move longitudinally thereon, said sleeve having two bevel-gears thereon, each one adapted to mesh with and be driven bya bevel-gear on an upright shaft, and said bevel-gear and upright shaft, of connections intermediate said rotatable disk, and sleeve, to move said sleeve, and carry one gear thereon into, and the other out of engagement with the bevel-gear on the upright shaft, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a loom, the combination with a rotatable disk having projections thereon, and a sleeve mounted to rotate with and move longitudin ally on a shaft, and said shaft,intermediate the gearing of the take-up roll and the let-off roll, said sleeve having two bevel-gears thereon, each one adapted to mesh with and be driven by a bevel-gear on the upright shaft, and said bevel-gear, and shaft,-of connections intermediate said disk and sleeve, to move said sleeve and carry one gear thereon into and the other out of engagement with the bevel-gear on the upright shaft, said connections consisting of a verticallymoving plate carrying two pivoted levers extending upon opposite sides of said rotatable disk,
and adapted to be engaged thereby to move said plate up or down, a rod or connection from said plate to one arm of a pivoted lever, and said lever having an arm carrying a pin or roll which extends in an annular groove in the hub of said sleeve, to move said sleeve, and an arm to be engaged and held by a locking-lever, and said locking-lever, substantially as shown and described.
3. In aloom,the combination with the shaft of the pattern-chain cylinder, a disk having projections thereon, fast on said shaft and a sleeve mounted to rotate with and move 1ongitudinally on a shaft, and said shaft, intermediate the gearing of the take-up roll and the let-off roll, said sleeve having two bevelgears thereon, each one adapted to mesh with and be driven bya bevel-gear on the upright shaft, and said bevel-gear and shaft, of connections intermediate said disk and sleeve, to move said sleeve and carry one gear thereon into, and the other out of engagement with the bevel-gear on the upright shaft, substantially as shown and described.
