PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HAWKINS AND SAMUEL HENRY HAWKINS, OE UPTON PARK,
' ENGLAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,967, dated August 25, 1903. Application filed January 20, 1903- Serial No. 139,732. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY HAWKINS and SAMUEL HENRY HAWKINS, engineers, subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at 482 Green street, Upton Park, in the county of Essex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide acetylene-generators with means for feeding the proper quantity of water to the calcium carbid in a regular manner.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is asectional elevation of an acetylene-generator with our invention applied thereto, and'Fig. 2 is an elevation of a detail of construction on an enlarged scale.
According to this invention the water is contained in an air-tight vessel a, situated above the generating-chamber g and communicating therewith by meansof a tube 1), open to the atmosphere at the top 0 and having an internal aperture 01, opening in the Water vessel a. The lower end 6 of this tube 12 is secured to or formed in one with the top g of the generating-chamber g and is provided with a concentric sleeve or chamber f, which is screwed or otherwise removably secured to the lower end eof said tube 12 and furnished with a small central hole in the top. This sleeve or chamber f is internally threaded, and a screwed piece h, with longitudinal grooves c therein, is screwed into this sleeve or chamber f, said screwed piece it carrying a needle 70, which projects upward through vthe central hole in the top of the sleeve or chamber f. By this construction the sleeve or chamber f being surrounded bya jacket of water the screwed piece it and needle is are kept cool and can be readily removed for cleaning when required. The water drips down the needle is, through the central hole, into the sleeve or chamber f, and thence, through the grooves 11 in the screwed piece h,
drops onto the carbid in the generating vessel g, the gas evolved thereby passing up-, ward through the space g to the gas-pipe g leading to the burners.
To start or stop the action of the generator, the tube bis provided with a spring-controlled valve, the'rod Z of which is externally threaded at its upper end and fitted with a fly or other nut m. By screwing up the nut m the valve is lifted from its seat n, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby allowing the water from the vessel or to pass the valve seating '11. When the nut m is unscrewed, the spring m thereon seats the valve on the rod Z on its seating n, thereby closing the tube 1) and preventing the water flowing from the vessel a to the generating-chamber.
The needle 7e may be rigidly secured to the screwed piece it or it may be screwed or otherwise removably attached to the screwed piece h.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In acetylene-generators of the character described, the combination with a water-supply tube and a generating-chamber, of means for feeding the water to the carbid in the generating-chamber, comprising a sleeve or chamber located in the water-supply tube and having a small aperture in its upper end, a longitudinallygrooved piece removably fitted in its lower end, and a needle fitted in said grooved piece and projecting upward through the small aperture in the sleeve or chamber, substantially as described.
2. In acetylene-generators of the character described, the combination with a water-supply chamber, a tube communicating therewith, a valve controlling the flow of water from the upper part of the tube into the lower part thereof, and a generating-chamber, of means for feeding the water from the lower end of the before-mentioned tube to the carbid in the generating-chamber, comprising a sleeve located in the lower part of the Water-supply tube and having a small our hands, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this 5th day of January, 1903.
