SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letter! Patent N0. 7 36,853, dated August 18, 1903.
Application led 'May 28,1903. 4Serial No. 159.135. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PALMER E. JOHANNSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carson, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful lmrprovements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelops; and its object is to provide an envelop having fastening means of novel construction whereby the same may be securely held about documents of various bulks.
The invention consists 'in providing a spring-plate which is adapted to be fastened to one of the flaps of the envelop and which is provided with an eye for the reception of around the envelop, and the free end thereof is adapted to be drawn between the spring-plate and the flap, so as to be held firmly in place.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts herein after more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showingthe preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an envelop having my improved fastening thereon. Fig. 2 is a section therethrough. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through the fastener, and Fig. 4 is a similar view through a modified form of fastener.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is an envelop of any suitable form, to one of the iaps of which is secured a fastener of novel construction. As shown in Fig. 3, this fastener comprises a spring concavo-convex plate 2, having an eyelet 3 inteal therewith, which is adapted to be inserted through and clamped upon the outer flap of the envelop. Extending from the plate 2 is an integral spring-arm 4, which is provided near its outer end with an aperture 5.' A cord 6 is secured within this aperture and is adapted to be wrapped :dient the envelop and the free end inserted under arm 4 and around the plate 2, soras to be clamped between thev late and arm and the flap to which the plate 1s secured. While the arm 4, plato 2. and eyenot limit myself let 3 are preferably constructed of a single piece of metal, l can, if desired, form the plate with a central aperture 7, through which a separate eyelet 8 may be inserted and clamped upon the plate and the flap of the envelop. -l have shown this modification in Fig. 4.
It will be seen that by providing a fastener yof the construction hereinbefore described the envelop can be adjusted to contain documents of various bulks.
In the foregoing the preferred form of my invention; but lI do modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with anenvelop having a flap; of 1a plate secured to the iap, a
' spring-arm extending from the plate and integral therewith, and a flexible strand connected to the arm and adapted to inclose the envelop and be clamped between the plate and flap.
2. The combination with an envelop having a iiap; of a concave-convex spring-plate, means for securing the plate to the flap, a spring-arm extending from the plate at an ineline, and a exible strand secured to the arm and adapted to inclose the envelop-and be clamped between the plate and flap. l
3. The combination with an envelop having a flap; of a concave-convex an eyelet integral therewith and adapted to secure the plate to the flap, a spring-arm extending -at an incline from the plate and intcgral therewith, anda flexible strand secured to the end of the arm and adapted to inclose the envelop and to be clamped between the plate and iiap.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa-ture in presence of two witnesses.
