Application filed September 20, 1901. Serial '75I 7l- (N0 m To (tZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MAX HERING, a subject of the King of Saxony, residingin Zittau, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tater-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to improvements in water-gages for steam-boilers, and relates more especially to means whereby breakage of the gage-glass is prevented almost to a certainty and whereby fragments of the glass if breakage should have occurred are prevented from being scattered around.
According to the present invention the gageglass is made of comparatively large male or outer diameter and a female or inner diameter usual in gage-glasses, thereby obtaining a relatively thick wall. This thick-walled gage-glass tube is surrounded by a protecting-mantle, preferably of metal, such as brass or the like, which in order to admit of ready inspection of the water-level within the glass tube is provided with cut-out portions. A cap or top nut and a bottom nut are threaded upon the respective ends of the protectingmantle after washers are placed between them and the glass tube ends, whereby the steam and water tight joints are obtained. The top and bottom nuts are provided with the steam and Water inlets, respectively.
In order to make my invention more readily understood, I have illustrated it on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a water-gage according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating my invention attached to a boiler.
Referring to the drawings, a is the gageglass tube with a relatively thick wall.

c is the top nut provided with an inner thread engaging a corresponding thread upon the outer upper end of the protecting-mantle 7, which is provided with suitable openingse to allow of ready inspection of the height of the water-level within the gage-glass. Upon the lower end of the mantle f threads the bottom nut 01. The top and bottom nuts 0 and d are provided with steam-inlet g and waterinlet h, respectively. The mantle f is provided with right and left hand threads on its opposite ends.
For more tightly packing the gage-glass or for removing it for repairing or other purposes it is only necessary to rotate the protecting-mantle in one or the other direction, whereby the top and bottom nuts are tightened or loosened, respectively.
In Fig. 3 I have shown how my gage may be attached to a boiler, the pipes g and h in this instance being bent between the gage and the boiler, so as to make them sufficiently flexible to permit the end pieces 0 and d to be moved toward and from each other in manipulating the gage, said pipes passing loosely through the heads of brackets t' andj, secured to the boiler 7t. Any other suitable or known means for accomplishing this purpose may be adopted.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a water-gage the combination of a relatively thick walled glass tube, a protectingmantle surrounding the said thick-walled glass tube and provided with inspection-openings, a top nut and a bottom nut threading upon the upper and lower ends respectively of the said protecting-tube, steam and water pipes integral with said nuts, and washers interposed between the ends of the said glass tube and the inner faces of the said top nut and bottom nut, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
