No Model B. H. ASHCROFT, BLOW-OPP FOR STEAM BOILERS.
No. 247,736. Patented 0012.4,1881.
W -NE E INVENTEIR' N. PETERS Phvwumn mr. Washi nnnnnn a UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIG.
EDWARD H. ASHCROFT, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
BLOW-OFF FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,736, dated October 4, 1881.
Application filed July 30, 1881. (No model.)
[[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, EDWARD H. ASHCROFT, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Blow-Offs for Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a boiler fitted with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents in section a detail construction enlarged.
This invention relates to means whereby the scum or other matter upon the surface of the water in the boiler may be readily blown off therefrom, and, also, whereby such sediment as is held in suspension at the bottom of the boiler may be removed; and it consists in the devices and method herein described of supporting the blow-ofi pipe or tube within the boiler.
I have represented my improvement as applied to a boiler known as the compound tubular boiler, and for blowing oft the scum or foreign material on the surface of the water in the boiler.
In the drawings, A represents a pipe, which is provided with any desired shape of perforation, to permit the entrance of water and scum therein. It is supported at one end by means of the screw-plug a, which is screwed into the boiler-head, and which has a projection or plug upon or in which the tube fits. The other end of the perforated pipe is supported by the-cylindrical plug or pipe 0., into which it enters, as shown, but does not tightly fit the bore thereof, sufficieut space being allowed to provide for its expansion and elongation. This tubular plug or pipe to is also screwed into the head of the boiler, but at the end opposite to that containing the plug a, and it has upon its interior a screw-thread, a into which the escape-pipe a is screwed.
' In the detail view shown in Fig. 2 the construction varies a little from that above described, in that in lieu of the perforated pipe fitting directly the hollow plug, it fits upon intermediate connecting portion, a.
The construction, or substantially the construction, described .is necessary for the purpose of enabling the perforated pipe A to be easily placed and secured in position within the boiler-shell.
The construction is substantially the same as above described when the blow-ofi is used at or near the bottom of the boiler.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, in asteain-boiler, of the perforated pipe A, the solid plug a, the hollow plug a, and the escape-pipe a all substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. As a means of supporting a perforated blow-off pipe within a boiler and between its heads, the plugs a a projecting inwardly from the boiler-heads and entering or overlapping the ends of the pipe, all substantially as described.
EDWARD H. ASHCROFT.
