Description

dig: fizlgehnle nfemb in in time jitters when no making earl of figs sane.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat 1, JOHN D. MILLS, of the city of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Paint, composed of the following composition Lime obtained from white marble or oyster shells, purely slaked by the air, five (5) parts; oxide of zinc, prepared by combustion, four (4) parts; ashes, burnt from good solid wood, three (3) parts; of soft sand-stone, that is easy to grind on a dry mill, two parts, which grinds as easy as wheat into flour, and which is in abundance in our country; plaster Paris, one (1) part. I then grind and bolt each article by itself, in a dry mill'(same as wheatfor bread.) I then add all the composition together, as above specified then add linseed oil, well boiled, with a good drier, as much as will bringit to a. proper consistency for the oil-paint mill, and when it is ground through the oil-paint mill use the linseed oil and drier (if it is dry) to bring it to a proper consistency to be applied with a painters brush. The drier we use in this paint is Japan varnish, about one gill to the gallon of the linseed oil.
This paint, with its ingredients as above proportioned, and of pure articles, forms a beautiful drab color naturally. It spreads even, and forms an even, smooth body, and the more exposed to the heat and sun, the harder and more glossy it gets, and for durability it will be second to none now in use, and you can make any color you choose, almost, except a few that would be permanent colors, just the same as you could with the best article of white lead, (for we do not get a pure article of white lead any more, and'therefore we cannot make durable colors, as we used to do when the lead was pure.)
What I claiIn as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The composition of the above-nained ingredients as a paint, and to be applied as I apply them, by grinding, bolting, oiling, and painter-s brush.
JOHN D. MILLS.
