IMPRGVEMENT 1N FENCE.
fit-lp -tlgetttttefttnh tu lt'tgtsc ttttett nttut nut uniting pattini tige time TO ALL WHOM Il MAY CONCERNi Be it linown that I, DANIEL KAUIMAN, ol` Boiling;` Springs, in thercounty of Cumberland, and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in Fences; and I do hereby declare that thev following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved fence, part of one 4of the braces being broken away.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: e', iig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal lsection of the same, taken through the line y y, iig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts.
My'invention has for its'object't'o furnish an improved fence, simple in construction, light, strong, and durable, and one which can be easily and quickly put together; and it consists in the inclined and cross-braces, in combination with the double-mortised posts7 and with the rails, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described and set forth. i
A are the posts, which are made double, as shown in iigs. 1 and 3, a space being left between the two parts, in which the ends of the rails B moet. Each part of a post is mortised for the reception of the rails B of the panel, adjacent to that part. By this arrangement the mortises maybe made narrow, each mortise having only to receive the end oi'one rail, the ends of the rails of two adjacent panels meeting in the space between the parts oi' the double post, so Xthat a rail can only get out of place by pushingthe rails through the entire length of the fence lengthwise. C are the inclined supporting braces, the uppcrlyendsof which enter between the lupper ends of the parts of the posts A, the upper ends` of said 4posts-and braccsdbeing securely nailed together. The lower ends of the braces C rest in the metallic shoes 1) by which they are prevented frein coming in con tact with the ground, and arc thus prevented from decay. The lower parts of the inclined braces C are'held in their proper relative positions, and connected with the lowerends of the double posts A by the horizontal or cross-braces E, which are made in several parts, securely nailed to each other and to the posts A and braces C. The part or piece el extends from the inner edge of one-bruce to the inner edge of' the other brace, upon the opposite side of the panel, passing through the space between the lower ends of the double post A, and to which the said lower ends of the said double post are'securely nailed. The parts e2 have their inner ends resting against 'the edges of the lower ends of the double posts A, and thcir'outer ends are securely nailed to the sides of the braces C, :1s shown in iig. 3. l The parts-orpieccs e2 may be placed upon one or both sides of the parts or pieces el, according to the required strength 'of the fence. I
By this construction, all the fence-maker has to do in putting up the fence is to bore the holes or tnortises in the posts A, cut the braces of the required length, and nail the braces and posts together, so that the fence is very easily and rapidly constructed, und, when constructed, is very strong'and secure, the horizontal or crossbraces eiectunlly preventing the posts fronl'splitting.
I-clniin as new, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent- 1. 'lhe fence-posts A, when supported above the ground by ineens oi' the metallic shoes l), pivoted to the lower ends of the inclined braces C', as herein described, for the purpose specified.
2. rEhe posts A, formed of two parts, slotted for the reception o't'- the rails B, the ends of the rails of` one panel fitting against the ends of the railsof thc opposite panel, in the centre of said posts, in' combination with thc braces (l, horizontal pieces el e2, und-metallic supporting-shoes' D, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
The above specication of my invention signed by me, this 23d day of September, 180?.
I i DANIEL KAUFMAN.
