PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. PEAK, on JONESBORO, ILLINOIS.
COPY-HOLDER.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,005, dated August 11, 1903.
Application filed March 26, 1903.
T0 at whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at J onesboro, in the county of Union, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a copy-holder, and particularly to the structure adapted for use in connection with type-writing machines.
The invention has for an object to improve the construction and arrangement of the paper-guide and friction-roller cooperating with the paper-carrying cylinder.
A further object ofthe invention is to improve the supporting means for the holder, so that it may be adjusted in any desired position most convenient to the operator.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the copy-holder mounted upon a support by which an adjustment in the vertical and horizontal plane may be secured. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the copy-holder. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a modified application of the invention, and Fig. 4 is a plan of the base-plate.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings. j
The letterAdesignates a frame having vertical standards A at its opposite ends and mounted upon a base-plate A in any desired manner. The feed roller or cylinder B is pivotally mounted in these standards by means of a shaft B, which is provided with a handle 13 for the purpose of rotating the feed-roller. Beneath this roller a paper-guide O is pivotally mounted in the standards A, as shown at O, and-extends beneath the lower segment of the roller B. The front portion of this guide is bent inward, as shown at C to closely approach the roller and may be suitably ruled or graduated, as shown. This guide is also provided with a recessed portion 0 within which the friction-roller O is pivotally mounted. This friction-roller is normally held in contact with the feed-roller by means of a Serial No. 149,746. (No model.)
spring 0 disposed between the frame A and the upper surface of the guide 0 at one side of the pivot thereof, so as to hold the roller C in proper frictional contact with the feedroller. These rollers may beof any desired material, preferably having rubber or elastic surfaces, such as ordinarily used in typewriters. Upon the front of the guide 0 fingers (J are suitably secured and extend upward over the feed-roller B, so as to guide the paper backward from the front of the roller.
In Fig. l a desirable form of support is shown adapted forapplication to either adesk, table, or base of a type-writer and comprises a clamp D, having a sleeve D, within which a vertical standard D is adj ustably secured by means of a set-screw D and provided at its upper end with a socket D, adapted to receive vone end D of the N-shap'ed connector D, which may be secured against vertical movement in said socket by means of a setscrew D and in order to prevent a rotary movement in the socket interlocking teeth D may bevbrought into the most convenient po-' sition for use of the operator, either at the back of the type-writing machine or at one side thereof, as may be found most desirable.
As showing one desirable means for connecting the frame A and the base-plate A the said plate has been illustrated as provided with lugs or ears A upon the opposite side edges thereof adapted to engage corresponding recesses in the edges of the frame A. The plate A is also provided with a latch A, pivoted to the under face thereof at A and adapted to swing through a cut-away portion A in one of the standards A and into contact with the upper face of the frame A to hold the parts in engagement with each other.
In Fig. 3 a modified application of the pended claims.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a copy-holder, a feed-roller, a paperguide pivotally mounted beneath said roller, and aspring forholding one edge of said guide adjacent to said roller.
2. In a copy-holder, a feed-roller, a papergnide pivotally mounted beneath the same, a friction'roller pivoted in said guide, and a spring beneath said guide for holding the friction-roller in contact with the feed-roller.
3. In a copy-holder, a feed-roller, a paperguide pivotally mounted beneath the same at one side of the pivot of said roller, a frictionroller pivoted in said guide, a spring beneath said guide for holding the friction-roller in contact with the feed-roller, and guide-fingers extending upward from said paper-guide.
connecting-bar between said standard and plate having at opposite ends a pivot and socket connected by a diagonally-disposed portion, and means to permit an adjustment at each end thereof.
5. In a copy-holder, a frame, a feed-roller mounted therein, a base-plate provided with lugs upon opposite side edges thereof, and a latch pivoted upon said plate to engage said frame.
6. In a copy-holder, a frame having standards at opposite ends, a feed-roller mounted in said standards, a base-plate provided with lugs at opposite sides thereof, and a latchhook pivoted to the under face of said plate to swing through a cut-away portion of one standard into engagement with the upper face of said frame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. PEAK.
