INSTRUMENT FOR DETERMINING THE GAGE LEVEL AND ELEVATION OF RAILWAY-TRACKS.

extend their usefulness, and reduce their weight without increasing the expense; and the invention consists in certain novel feae tures of the construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specified in the claims.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of the implement applied. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the implement applied as a leveler.
The improved device consists of a beam formed of spaced side members 10 11, connected by blocks and each provided with an intermediate depression terminating in shoulders 13 14., forming stops, said depressions being of a length to correspond to the gage of the railway-rails and adapted to be employed for that purpose, the rails indicated at 15 16. The members 1011, are widened at one end by extensions 17 18 to increase the width in engagement with the rail 15 or 16, as the case may be, and thus increase the steadiness of the device and prevent any tendency to be overturned when in use. At some intermediate point of the beam'centrally thereof the inner surfaces of-the. members 1O 11 will be recessed, forming shoulders bined handle and guard 23 is secured to the ed by means of a longitudinal slot 27 in the scale engaging a transverse pin 28, passing through the extended ends, as indicated. The scale will be supported adjustably between the extended ends by a set-screw 29,-tapped through one of the end extensions 24 or 25.
The scale member 26 is thus adapted to be projected into engagement with one of the rails 15 or 16, as shown in Fig. 4:, to determine the difference in height between the two rails and to provide a simply-operated and ready means for accurately determining the proper relative positions of the rails upon curves. It will be obvious that by setting the one end of the implement upon the high rail and adjusting the scale until the bulb 20 is level the reading on the scale will denote the exact difference of the height. When not required, the scale is foldable between the side members of. the implement, asindicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this simple means a very compact, complete, and convenient implement is produced which may be employed to denote all the varying conditions of the railway-tracks and will enable the operators to readily correct any irregularities and restore the track to its proper condition when for any reason it becomes disarranged and likewise to properly adjust the relative positions of the rails when constructing new railways.
The whole device will preferably be of metal, generally steel, except the levelbulb, and may be of any suitable strength or weight.
In the foregoing description is shown the preferred form of the'implement, but is not necessarily limited thereto, as modifications maybe made therein without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and the right is therefore reserved of making all the changes which may fairly come within the scope of the invention and the claims made therefor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, abeam formed of spaced side members each having an intermediate depression correspondingin length to the gage of the railroad and connected by transverse blocks at the extremities of said depressions, and with said side members laterally extended at one end and longitudinally extended at the other end, and a scale movably connected between said longitudinally-extended ends and capable of vertical adjustment relative to said beam, snb- I stantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a beam formed of spaced side members having stops corresponding to the gage of the railwaytracks, and provided with oppositely-disposed recesses forming shoulders, a plate supported within said recesses on said shoulders, and a level-bulb supported upon said plate, substantially as described.
