REVERSIBLE RAIILWAY-RAI L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,305, dated March 26, 18 95..
' Application filed July 15, 1893. Serial No. 480,593- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Railway-Rails; andl do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved reversible railway rail; and consists in certain details of construction as will be fully described hereinafter.
To construct a railway rail in accordance with my invention, I form, by means of suitable rolls a rail, consisting of a central portion 6, forming a tread with the central longitudinal groove 5. Formed integral with the central portion 6 are two outwardly extending flanges 1 and 2, which make a rail capable of being used in two different positions.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a perspective view of my improved rail.
In operation, this construction of a rail is adapted for use on street car tracks, and the two flanges 1-2 may be used separately.
When the tread 1 has been worn out the rail is arranged end for end and the othertread 2 used until worn out, thereby extending the life of the rail.
My invention consists of a rail having two treads on the one side divided by a groove 5,
thereby forming a rail that will give double BENJAMIN A. THOMAS. LL. 8.]
