COM BINATI ON SAFETY RAI LWAY-TRACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,059, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed November 11, 1890. Serial No. 371,021. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLON G. HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combination SafetyRailway-Track; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railway-tracks; and it I 5 consists in the devices and appliances, their combinations and arrangements, as hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the invention is shown in vertical section.
A denotes the rail, which is formed. with lateral grooves or recesses a a, the portions of the rail above and below said grooves being of analogous form, so that when one face is worn the rail may be simply turned bottom 2 5 side up, thus providing two wearing-faces of the rail, and without particular increase in expense, as the rails may be readily rolled of required form, and may also be so arranged as to be readily reversed.
0 B B denote supports or chairs to engage the rail. Each of these supports is formed with a flange b to enter the groove of the rail, and preferably also with a flange 1), upon which the base of the rail may rest. These supports may be secured to the ties in any 3 5 suitable manner. Where the ordinary wood ties are used, they may simply be spiked down. Where a spike-fastening is used, I prefer to have the adjacent edges of the base of said supports let the oneinto the other. This gives to the supports greater firmness when the supports are bolted together by bolts Z9 One of the supports is provided with a tram-flange B and the other with a flange B provided with a safety groove to receive the flange of 5 the wheel. A rail so supported, While very firm and practically continuous, is still calculated for contraction and expansion Without injury, the supports extending the entire distance of the track as Well as the rail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with a tread, of a longitudinal support consisting of two interlocking plates bolted to said tread, one of said plates channeled to form a safety-groove.
2. A rail consisting of a tread and longitudinal supports engaging said tread, one'of said supports formed with asafety-groove and one of the supports with a tram-flange.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification-in the presence of two Witnesses.
SOLON G. HOWE.
