Be it known that I, WILLIAM S, JOHNSON, of Henderson, Henderson county, Kentucky,l have invented a new and usefulImpi-ovemen't in Bugg -Taps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention consists in a provision whereby the tap may be at all times set, and firmly held to such degree of proximity to the boxing, as, on the one hand, to avoid undue friction, and, on the other hand, to avoid all jostling and rattling ofthe parts; and this, whether the washersbe new or nearly worn out. In the accompanying drawingsl i Figure 1` shows the axle-arm by side elevation, and the other parts in axial section.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the tap. with another form of temper-screw.

A. is an axle-arm orjournal, terminating'at its outer and inner yends, respectively, in the customary screw, B, and collar (l. D is a, customary bush or boxing. E is the nu-t or tap proper, adapted to screw upon the portion B.l The screw-threaded orifice e, ofthe tap E, passes entirely .through the latter, and receives atemper-v screw, F, which, beingl set more or less forward into the tap, affords an adjustable shoulder or abutment for the tap, against thevend of the axle-screw, and sets an exact and controllable .limit to the advance of the tap. G and H are respectively the outer and inner washers. i

The operation of my improvement is-as follows: After the insertionvot` new washers, the temper-screw F is screwed just far enough inward to allow the tap to snugly confine the colla-r Gr, without pressing on it so tightly as to cause undue friction of the boxing either against the washers or axle. As the washers become worn, so as to loosen the boxing, the latter may be restored to its proper bearing vby a slight retraction of the temper-screw, without the customary insertion of new washers, with their attendant binding and-friction. One set of washers, on my plan, may be made to outlast several in the ordinary way, and perform better service, and with less injury to the parts. '.lhe temper-screw F cannot he easily lost, from jostling, because the pressurev against the endo` the spindle forces the threads firmly together,4 and holds both the screw Fand the tap E Asecurely in place.

I claim herein as new, and of my inventionl A buggy-tap, E, whose screw-threaded orifice, e, is prolonged to its outer end, and provided with a temperscrew, F, adapted to operate as set forth.
