SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,069, dated August 4, 1903. Application filed December 23, 1902. Serial No. 136,407. (No model.)

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DAMM, acitizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Water-Heater, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water-heaters; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which may be constructed at a moderate expense and which shall be efficient for the rapid heating of water in such localities as barber-shops, bath-rooms, and the like, where a large boiler would be too expensive and cumbersome, but where at the same time it is necessary that a constant supply of hot water shall be at hand.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a device of this class which shall be so simple in its construction that it may be operated by any previously unskilled person and which shall in all respects possess the advantages of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a water-heater constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Corresponding parts in both figures are indicated by similar numerals.
A suitable base 1 is provided, having a central recess 2, constituting an ash-pit, and this base is provided on its upper side with a horizontal flange 3, surrounding the ash-pit, and with an outer annular flange 4. A grate 18 is supported within the ash-pit, at the upper edge of the latter.
The body of my improved water-heater is composed of a single casting comprising an exterior cylinder 10, connected at its lower edge by a flange 5 with an interior upwardly and inwardly tapering drum 11, provided at its upper edge with an annular inwardly-extending flange 1 L. Alining openings in the outer cylinder and the inner drum 11 are connected by a flange 6, thus forming a fuelfeed opening, at the outer end of which is provided a hinged door 21. The cylinder 10 is provided at its upper edge with an exterior annular flange 7, which is in horizontal alinement with the flange 14 of the drum 11, and a cover 12, which forms a closure for the water-space 8 between the cylinder 10 and the drum 11, is connected by bolts 13 or other suitable means with the flanges 7 and 14c at the upper ends of the said cylinder and drum. The flange 14 has been described as annular, thereby implying the existence of a central opening 9, in alinement with which a collar 12 is formed upon the cover-plate 12, said collar being for the purpose of supporting a pipe or stack 15 for the escape of the products of combustion.
The exterior cylinder of the device is provided with flanged openings on opposite sides thereof, which are suitably connected with pipes 19 and 20 for the exit and admission of water to the interior of the water-space 8, and with additional pipes 22 and 23, by means of which a circulation may when desired be established in a tank or reservoir suitably con- "structed and located.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the part of the device which constitutes the combustion-chamber and the water-space is a single casting provided only with a detachable cover and a hinged door closing an opening through which fuel may be fed into the said combustion-chamber. This device is supported upon a single casting, which constitutes the ash-pit and with which the grate may or may not be integral. The cover-plate is provided with the collar with which the stovepipe is connected.
The operation of the device is obvious. When it has been set up for operation, a fire is started in the combustion-chamber, the walls of which extend the entire height of the water-space, thus subjecting the water contained therein to an intense degree of heat, whereby the temperature thereof will be rapidly raised. The construction istone of extreme simplicity, and it is obvious that any one capable of kindling a fire isqualified to operate the device. f
The water supply and exit pipes are to be connected with the openings provided therefor in the outer cylinder by means of screwthreads, as is usually the case. Said supply and exit pipes may of course be provided with means for regulating the admission and exit of water. 1
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination with a casting having a central recess constituting an ash-pit and provided with an annular horizontal supporting-flange and with an annular rib at the outer edge of the latter, of an annular waterchamber supported upon the flange and surrounded by'said rib, said water-chamber being composed of an exterior cylinder and an interior drum having alining openings connected by a flange constituting a fuel-feed opening, a door adjacent to the latter, water inlet and exit pipes, and a detachable annular cap constituting a cover for the waterspace and having an annular flange adapted to support a smoke-exit pipe.

In a,device of the class described, the combination with a base having an ash-pit and a supporting-flange surrounding the latter, of a water-heating chamber consisting of a single casting comprising an outer cylinder and an inner tapering drum connected at their lower ends by a flange resting upon the flange of the base member, said outer cylinder and inner drum being provided at their upper ends, respectively, with outwardly and inwardly extending annular flanges disposed
