Description

@Switch gratta attut @frn IMPROVEMENT 1N GANG-muses.
@igt tlgthult tratta in ia tlgtst trttrts 33mm rmt mating part at tige snuit.
TO ALL Wl-IOM IT MAYv CONCERN:
De it known that I, SETI! "WAY, of La- Porte, in thc county of La Porte, and State of Indiana, have invented a ncw and useful Improvenient'in Gang-Ploughs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which-w Figure I is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 isfa side elevation. Y
My improvement relates to that class of ploughs which are suspended upon wheels, and the points on which I have made my improvements on former machines will appear from the claims hereinafter to be set forth. In the drawings, A A are the wheels, attached' to the axle B, upon which is swung the frame 0,'by stirrups, in such a manner as to give the axle B from stationary to two inches play, as desired, on the frame C, so that when the wheels A A pass over anything rough, thc ploughs D D are not directly affected. The axle B, on the land-side, has eight inches crook, and on the furrow-side, four, which gives the dept-h of the furrow four inches, and makes the wheels level when in operation. When plcughing deeper, the depth to be levelled. by the stirrups. E is the seat, and is fastened to the frame C in Such a manner that the position in which the driver sits upon the same keeps the ploughs D D level, a'nd makes the rolling-cutters K K work in a proper manner. D D, the ploughs, attached to frame C by standards, which may be either wood or iron, and with a brace attached forward l0f standard to the frame C, and passing through7 or with a. fork on either side of standard, and fastened with a Wooden pin in such a manner, so that, in case the ploughs D D come in contact with a stone or root, the pin is broken, and the ploughs D D instantly liy back, and nothing is injured. F is the windlass. G is the lever, which is attached to the land-side of the axle B, and which is regulated by the windlass F. By winding the same, the axle is reversed, and the ploughs D D thrown out of and free from the ground, and the depth of the ploughs D D is also regulated thereby. The ploughs D D are lowered to theground instantly by the driver Stepping or pushing upon the catch J, 'which holds the windlass Ffrom flying back,'and the weight immediately reverses the windlass F and axle I3, and the ploughs D' D are instantly lowered. II is an equalizing doubletree or evener, either for three or four horses, the length of which is nine feet for four horses, cr six feet for three horses.` The whiiiie-trees, attached to chain, which works on rollers in equalizing doubletree I-I, playing on a half-inch holt, in such a manner that cach horse has his equal proportion of the draught. I is the tongue, which is attached to forward end of the frame C by bolt, in such a manner that when the ploughs D D are in v the ground` it works loose and free, and when the ploughs D D are elevated, the weight is supported by thc tongue I, which acts as a lever upon a bolt at the end, and above the said-tongue I, fastened to the frame C in Such a manner that the driver may bring the weight of the p loughs D D and frame C upon the said tongue I, which is supported by the neck-yoke attached to the horses, and is attached to the frame C, so that one horse walks directly in the furrow and the. others upon the land. K K, are theI cutting-rollers, attached to the frame C invsuch a manner that they draw, instead of push, as is the usuril mode, and they cut the stubble and grass with more ease and less draught. They are so attached by a slotted bar, that may be elevated or lowered, as desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to4 secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The mode of supporting the weight by the tongue I, and of elevating and lowering the ploughs D D by the axle B, lever G, windlass F, and catch respectively, constructed and larranged substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the axle B, lever G, windla'ss F, tongue I, and equalization double-tree H, respectivcly, constructed and arranged substantially as set forth. y
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in presence of'two subscribing witnesses. l
SETH WAY.
