Description

D. JACOBY.
Wheel-Plow.
Patented Aug 14, 1866..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID JAOOBY, OF MENDOTA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,147, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID JAOOBY, of the town of Mendota, county of La Salle, and State of Illinois. have invented an Improvement called Jacobys Riding-Plow, to be attached to any ordinary plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The nature of my improvement or invention consists in the attachment (which requires but few minutes) of my carriage, either permanently or temporarily, to any right or left hand in ordinary use, and while riding regulate the direction and depth of the furrow by means hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention attached to a plow. Fig. 2 represents end view of same.
The frame of the carriage will rest upon two wheels, one of which is placed in advance of the other to avoid the furrow. This frame consists of two side pieces, A A, and end pieces, B 0, put together as represented in Figs. 1 and 2. On the under side of A A are secured the castings D D, to which the axles of the wheels are attached.
Between B and O a broad plank, IE, will be fastened on A A. On this rests the spring of the drivers seat F, also the paddle G, which works on a hinge, s, and can be lowered to act as a vertical guide to the beam of the plow, or, by means of the hinge, thrown upon the carriage on E.
Firmly secured to the pieces A and (J will be the vertical timbers H H, which will contain a slot or mortise for the elevation or depression of the crosspiece I, whose ends are so constructed as to move vertically in the respective slots or mortises. Attached to each end of timber I will be a female screw, 0.
The end of the plow-beam 1" will be attached to this cross-timber I, either permanently, as at X, or temporarily, as at Y.
Passing through G A, also the female screw 0, attached to the ends of I, will be a vertical screw, P, on each side of H H, which, by the use of the levers J J, will elevate or depress the cross-piece I, and consequently the end of plow-beam attached.
The tongue to which the horses are attached is represented by T. Near the-end is a hook, z, intended to hold the lever L when the plow is made to pass above the sod.
A curved lever, L, one end passing near the seat of the driver, the short end under a roller, R, is attached to the handle of the plow, the fulcrum resting on end piece, B. By this lever the plow-boy will be enabled to change the direction of his furrow with ease at will while in motion, and by throwing up the paddle Gr upon E with this lever L so to elevate the plow as to be entirely above the surface of the ground, and thus drive on a road without danger to the machinery of his plow.
As a stay or rest in regulating the lateral motions of the plow, the arm WV passes the beam and is secured to E.
The mode of operating is to attach the end of the plow-beam to the cross-bar I, either permanently, as X, or temporarily, as Y; then, by means of lever J, depress the end of the beam to secure the depth of furrow desired, and lower the paddle G over the beam then, by means of lever L, the lateral motion of the plow is most completely and easily controlled; or, at will, by throwing upon its hinge the paddle G, the plow can be completely raised from the sod, so as to ride free from the surface.
In case of the temporary fixture, as by Y, I use a straight lever, passing by the drivers seat and beam to the handle of theplow, by which arrangement the desired result is obtained.-
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the screw P and its lever, by which the end of the plow is elevated or depressed, and thus a deep or shallow plowing effected, the lever L, for directing the lateral motion, and the hinged paddle G, for regulating the vertical motion of the plow, with the diagonally-set wheels, as herein described.
DAVID J AGOBY.
