SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. l734,205, dated July 21, 1903.

To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE E. WALTER, residing at New York,.in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Fire-Resisting Doors, dto., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the construction of fireproof or reresisting doors and 'the like; and its object is to provide a simple, durable, and eflicient construction of this character.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and the novel features thereof pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of the invention, Figure l is a side elevation of a door and casing with certain parts of the door broken away to show the construction thereof. Fig. 2 is a section of the door on the line a: of Fig. Vl.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
The casing l of the door is shown merely for purposes of illustration and forms no part of the present invent-ion. The door proper has a foundationor core which consists of a skeleton frame, preferably of hard wood or other light material, this skeleton frame being made up of vertical side pieces 2 2 and transverse cross-'pieces 3 and 4f. Between the side pieces 2 2 and the cross-pieces 3 and 4 are strips 5, located at intervals around the f ramel for purposes of stiffening and strength. The
upper endonly of this skeleton frame is shown g' but it will of course be understood `that, it extends throughout the door. The central panel of the door is formed of netting 6, preferably metallic or galvanized wire-netting, which is connected to the framework-by the strips 7preferably of galvanized sheet metal, the inner ends of whichA are connected to the netting 6 by means of the bolts 9, and the outer ends of which are secured (to the sides of the inner members of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2. The skeleton frame is covered with strips of asbestos board 10, and the entire door is sheathed with a coating of fireresisting composition ll, preferably the wellknown fire-resisting composition asbestolith, 5 5 which is applied in a plastic state and molded to the door by the use of dies, stamps, or otherwise. This outer sheeting may, however, be of any desirable fire-resisting composition which can be readily applied and 6o which-would serve the same purpose as the asbestolith. Y n
It will be seen that the construction described may be 'easilyV assembled by fastening the vertical and transverse members of the frame together, inserting the central panel,
preferably through the medium of the iron strips, as shown, placing the asbestos board in position on the frame, securing it in any suitable way thereto, if it is desired that it 7o should be fastened to the frame, and molding or pressing the composition thereon. This provides a structure the wooden framework of Whichis light and sufficiently strong, which has less tendency to warp than ,if the framework were solid, and in which there is an advantage `both on the ground of lightness and strength and also because of the fire-resisting qualities due to the presence of the airspaces Within the framework and between the 8o stilfenig-strips 5. The body portion of rough asbestos board provides both a stiffening and fire-resisting element and likewise a rough surface, to which the plastic composition can be applied and by which it will be securely held.

The nature of the composition, which I have termed asbestolith, is set forth in the Ico patent to Charles W. Kane, No. 645,033, March 6, 1900, and may be, brieiiy stated, said to conn fu tain calcined magnesite, pulverized dolomite, fibers, silicate of magnesium, muriate of am monia, chlorid of magnesium, and water. It will be understood, however, that this is merelya preferred form of fire-resisting composition, and it will also be understood that wherein the claims I use the word door7 I am not necessarily limited in the use of this invention in connection with adoor, as a similar construction might be applied to the trim or framework or to other parts.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fire-resisting construction for use in a door or the like, comprising a frame made up of vertical and transverse strips of wood, stiffening-strips located at intervals in said frame between said vertical and transverse strips whereby air-spaces will be left in said frame, a central panel of metallic netting and an outersheathing of a fire-resisting composition.
4. A fire-resisting construction for use in a door or the like, comprising a skeleton frame of suitable light material, a central panel of metallic netting fastened thereto, strips ot' asbestos-board covering said skeleton frame and an outer sheathing of a lireresisting plastic composition incasing the entire door and molded thereto.
5. A door construction comprising askeleton wooden frame, a central panel of metallic netting secured to said frame through the interposition of galvanized-metal connectingstrips, an asbestos-board covering for said frame and an outer incasing sheath of a fireresisting composition applied in a plastic state and molded thereto. i
6. In a door construction in combination, a skeleton wooden frame, a central panel of metallic netting secured to said frame, an asbestos-board covering for said frame and an outer inclosing sheath ot` asbestolith, molded to conform to said asbestos covering and said central panel.
