P TENT OFFI E.
CORN-ICU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,095 dated July 21, 1963.
. Application filed March 1'7, 1902. Serial No. 98,699. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. RICHMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairgrove, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Oorn-Oultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains .to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvement-s in corn-cultivators, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable device for running the plows at any given depth by means of the attachment with the whiffietree and also one that can be easily moved laterally while in the ground by utilizing the propelling power for this purpose. This object I attain by means of a device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a view of the same in modification. Fig. 3 represents one of the beams detached, showing the means of attachment and adjustment for regulating the depth of the plow. Fig. at is a detail representing the swivel connection at the front ends of the beams of the gang part of the cultivator. Fig. 5 represents the connection between the single whiffletree of the horse and a direct attachment of the cross-piece oftwo of the plows. Fig. 6 is a detail showing the solid frame represented in the modification illus- .trated in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A represents the tongue of the cultivator of any desired size and length for guiding the same and also providing a support for the cultivators and a suitable seat for the rider when used as a sulky-cultivator. It also supports a suitable doubletree B, from which are suspended suitable rods 0, to which are attached the swingletrees D. At or near the at tachment of the swingletrees are secured the drawing-rods E, which are attached to the gang-cultivators F on either side. Said adj usting-rod E may be any desired length and attached at any desired point on the support 0 for giving the desired direct draft cultivators.
G is any suitable frame of any desired construction and of any suitable material for supupon the porting the tongue A and the wheels H. To
said frame G are fastened by any suitable means pieces I and K. I prefer a sleeve 1 and K provided with a suitable thumb or set screws I and K for holding the same firmly in position. Between said pieces I and K are swivel upright pieces L for permitting the cultivators .to easily move laterally or swing from side to side. Said upright swivelpieces L are preferably formed with a groove L and holes L for receiving and bolting the front ends of the cultivator-beams and also a stay-block M. The stay-block M may be made in any desired way for adjusting its length by having one end resting in the groove L and the back end bolted to the beam of the cultivator, and for regulating the depth of the cultivators the said block is adjusted by means of holes M and thus the cultivator is prevented from going below a certain desired depth. Still by means of the drawing-rod E the cultivators can be drawn down to always remain at said depth and by means of the swivel L at the front ends of the beams of the cultivators the drawing of the cultivator comes directly between the two beams and assists the operator to turn or laterally swing the same without raising it from the ground and without'using his own force to push it to one side or the other, as
desired. This construction may be made for gang plows or cultivators without the tongue. By omitting the tongue and adjusting the arch this construction may be used as a tongueless cultivator.
The beams O of the gang-cultivators shown in Figs. 1 and 3 are hinged at 0 in any suitable way toenable them to swing sidewise or laterally while in the ground. The front ends of the beams are curved upward and forward and provided with any suitable means for attaching the same in the groove L of the swivel uprights L, preferably by means of a suitable bolt.
The modification of this device shown in Figs. 2 and 6 has the beams of the cultiva- ICO tors made similar to those above described, omitting the hinged joints, and in the place of the two upright swivel-pieces L, as above described, I use a solid-frame swivel in the center at the top and the bottom, with similar upright pieces with grooves to receive the front end of the cultivator-beams and suitable blocks or attaching device for adjusting the depth of the plows.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a double or gang cultivator a beam 0 having a hinged joint 0 and a curved front end provided with a block M combined with a swivel-upright L having a groove L all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a double or gang cultivator the combination of cultivator-beams 0 attached at the front end to a swivel provided with a block M for adjusting the depth of the plow with a rod E connecting the cultivators directly with the draft of each horse, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a double or gang cultivator a tongue A, frame G, wheels H pieces I and K, up right swivels L, curved beams 0, blocks M combined with support 0, attached whiflletree D and draft-rod E, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof .I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
