COMBINED DISPLAY-STAND AND TRUCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,847, dated July 14, 1903.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton,

in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa,

of such devices which" are particularly do signed for exhibiting'couches in sale-rooms and the like. Such stands have for their purpose to display the couches in such manner as to effect an economy of spacein sale-rooms and to enable the couches to be easily and conveniently shifted to and from their places.

The objects of the present invention are, first, to provide a stand of the character referred to so constructed that the couch will be held in a perfectly upright or vertical position, whereby less floor-space will be required for its exhibition and storage and the interior construction of the couch can be clearly displayed to view without the necessity of lifting up or otherwise disturbing the couch; also, to provide novel means for securely attaching the couch to the stand in suchmanner as to accommodate couches of varying widths.

To these ends my invention consists in the features and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims following the description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- V Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved stand. The numeral 1 indicates a base or platform mounted upon casters 2, one of said casters being preferably attached to the under side of each corner of'the platform. Bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the rear edge of the platform are two parallel and vertical standards or uprights 3, saidstandards at their upper ends being vertically slotted, as

at 4. Disposed transversely to the standards 3 is a clamp-bar 5, which is secured to the standards 3 by headed bolts 6, which pass through the clamp-bar and through the slots 4 of the standards, and on the rear threaded ends of said bolts are arranged washers and nuts 7 and 8, by means of which the clampbar may be securely attached to the standards. By loosening the nuts S the bolts 6 may be freely moved in the slots 4 and the clamp-bar 5 may be adjusted-vertically to any desired height, and by then tightening up said nuts the clamp-bar will be held in its adjusted position. The clamp-bar is longitudinally slotted at its opposite ends, as at 9, and passing through said slots are the shanks of clamping-bolts 10, said bolts at their forward ends being bent 'at right angles to'their shanks, as at 11, to form hooks, and said hooks are preferably provided at their extremities with heads or enlargements 12. On the rear threaded ends of said bolts are fitted washers 13 and butterfly-nuts 14.

In practice the couch stands in. a vertical position on the stand, the foot of the couch resting on the platform 1 and the rear edges of the sides15 of the couch resting against the clamp-bar 5. The hooked ends 11 of the clamping-bolts 10 are caused to engage the upper edges of the sides 15 of the couch, the shanks of the bolts lying against the inner faces of the sides 15 and the headed ends 12 of the bolts engaging the outer corners of the upper edges of said sides 15, whereby the ho ooked ends of the bolts are prevented from slipping off or being otherwise displaced from the sides of the couch. By tightening up the nuts 14 thecouchwfll be firmly, securely, and rigidly clamped to the clamp-bar 5, so that the couch will be immova bly supported and held in place on the stand. The couch may now be readily wheeled upon the casters into place-as, for example, up against the wall of the sales-room. The couch will now be displayed and exhibited in a most att-ractivemanner and may easily and quickly be wheeled from its placeand turned around to exhibit its interior construction. Bysupporting the couch in a true vertical position not only is the interior construction of'the couch displayed clearly and conveniently to view for examination, but the platform may be made of relatively small size, so that the very least possible amount of floor-space will be occupied by the couch and the stand.

By arranging the clamping-bolts 10 in the horizontal slots 9, formed in the clamp-bar,

' said bolts may be quickly and conveniently shifted laterally to cause them to engage couches of varying widths.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I not only provide a stand adapted to display both the exterior and the interior of the couch in the most efiectual and attractive manner, but I also provide a truck by means of which the couch may be shifted from place to place or may be readily turned to display either its exterior or interior to view in a most easy and convenient manner. Furthermore, the couch can be readily lowered so as to rest on its legs. It will be noticed that when the couch is attached to the clamp-bar 5 and rigidly secured thereto by the fastenings 10 the feet at the lower end of the couch project beyond the standards 3. By this arrangement the couch may be turned down so as to rest upon its feet without its becoming necessary to detach the couch from the clamp-bar or to disturb the truck in any manner whatsoever. Prospective purchasers can thus Very conveniently test a couch to ascertain whether or not it is perfectly comfortable and to ascertain the condition of the springs. When the couch is in its lowered position, the truck is supported by the couch itself, and the weight of the couch or of the person sitting thereon is in no Way applied to any portion of the truck. After having been lowered so as to rest upon its legs in this manner the couch has only to be lifted again to a vertical position, when it will stand on end on the truck and may be readily wheeled about in the manner before described.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In acombined display-stand and truck, the combination with a platform provided with vertical standards, of a horizontal clampbar secured to said standards, and hooked clamping-bolts attached to and horizontally adjustable on said clamp-bar, the hooked ends of said clamping-hooks being arranged to engage the edges of the. sides of a couch and hold the latter in a vertical position on the platform, substantially as described.

2. In a combined display-stand and truck, the combination with a platform provided with vertical standards, of ahorizontal clampbar secured to said standards, andhooked clamping-bolts attached to and horizontally adjustable on said clamp-bar, the hooked ends of said clamping-hooks being arranged to engage the edges of the sides of a couch and hold the latter in a vertical position on the platform, the ends of the hooked portions of the clamping-bolts being headed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a combined display-stand and truck, the combination with a platform provided with vertical standards, of a horizontal clampbar secured to said standards and longitudinally slotted at its opposite ends, and hooked clamping-bolts loosely passing through the slotted ends of the clamp-bar and arranged to engage the edges of the sides of a couch to hold the latter in a vertical position on the platform, and nuts on the rear threaded ends of the clamping-bolts for drawing the couch and clamping-bolts to place on the clamp-bar, substantially as described.

4. In a display-stand and truck, the combination with a wheeled platform provided with vertical standards, of a vertically-adjustable horizontal clamp-bar supported on said standards and longitudinally slotted at its opposite ends, hooked clamping bolts loosely passing through the slotted ends of the clamp-bar and arranged to engage the edges of the sides of the couch to hold the latter in a vertical position on the platform, and means for drawing the couch and said clamping-bolts to place on the clamp-bar, substantially as described.
