PATENT @rFrcE.
PAIL-EAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,470, dated July 14, 1903.
Application filed September 20, 1902. Serial No. 124,207. No model- T (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN EASKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pail-Ears, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a cheap and simple pail-ear which maybe attached to apail without solder and in such a way that the strain of the bail tends always to hold it in proper position against the side of the pail.
The nature of the invention will clearly appear from the description and claims following, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a device embodying my invention as applied to a tin pail. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the same and fragments of the pail and hail.
In the drawings, A designates an ordinary tin pail, B the wire bail therefor, and O my improved ear. This latter is stamped from tin or other suitable sheet metal, preferably in an oval outline, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper part is preferably embossed to form a nearly-full circular bead G, inclosing a convex portion 0 having a central hole 0 to take the bail. This part of the ear is struck up in stamping, leaving a marginal flange O to rest against the side of the pail, with space enough between the pail and the disk of the ear for the bail-hook, as shown in Fig. 3. Below the circular disk of the ear the stock inclines toward the side of the pail, as shown in the same figure, the inclination being sharper at C than at the sides, where the stock forms folded or beaded projections O to give greatly-increased strength to this portion of the ear. The ear terminates at the bottom in a flat portion 0 perforated for a rivet at O The ear is fastened to the side of the pail by a single rivet D. As this rivet is placed directly below the bail connection, the tension of the bail in carrying the pail tends always to draw the ear closely against the sides of the pail.
To prevent the ear from turning, a boss A may be struck up from the side of the pail, as shown in Fig. 3. Around this boss the marginal flange of the ear fits neatly, and the ear is thus held in true vertical position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pailear, comprising a centrally-perforated disk to take the bail-hook, a marginal flange to rest against the side of the pail and carry the disk far enough away therefrom to take the inner end of the hook, and an inclined and ribbed part below the disk, terminating in a JOHN EASKER.
