PiPE CONNECTiON-' $IECIFICATION fo g part of Letters Patent No. 733,346, dated July 7, 1903. Application filed December 22, 1902, Serial No. 186,150. (No inodclil To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN G. TALLER- DAY, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, andaresidentofWaterloo,Blackhawkcounty, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe connections; and the object of my improvement is to provide such means as will render the forming of such connection easy, secure, and leakage-proof.
Another and an especial attribute of my invention is the forming of a joint which is unusually well adapted for the connecting together' of lengths of metallic pipe, particularly such pipe as is rolled from single sheets and having single riveted or look seam lengthwise thereof.
I have shown these means in the drawings furnished herewith, and in which Figure 1 represents the ends of two lengths of metallic pipe furnished with my improved connecting means, but disassembled. Fig. 2 is a View of an end of one of these pipe lengths partially wrapped with prepared cloth, and Fig. 3 shows the connection as completely assembled and wrapped.

It is well known that when pipes are formed of thin metal, more especially when the diameter thereof is considerable and also when such pipes are rolled from sheet-metal plates and have single riveted or look seam lengthwise thereof, it has in practice been found diiiicult to provide tight, lasting, or impervious connections. My improved pipe connection, as hereinafter described, successfully provides a means for overcoming said faults.

A short closely-fitting cylinder is in troduced within the end of the length 0 and attached thereto by means of rivets e. v A cylindrical band g, Whose interior diameter is somewhat larger than the outside diameter of the length 0, is also secured about said length 0 by the said rivets e. The opposite end of the other length I) is supplied with an outer concentric band f, similarly attached.
When it is not necessary nor desirable that the connections be made water-tight, the connection is simply formed in the following manner: The length I) is slipped over and about that part of the cylinder (Z which protrudes from the length 0. Any desired number of clips a may then be slipped through the" spaces left between the bands f and g and the lengths Z) and c, and when the ends of said clips are bent over so as to closely engage said hands a firm connection is made. In other cases when it is desirable that the joint shall he impervious to the passage of liquids the connection is made in the following manner: A strip of cloth, rendered impervious by means of the application thereto of asphaltum orany other appropriate substance, is first enwrapped about the exposed end of the cylinder (Z and a portion of the end of the length 0. The length b may then be slipped over the wrapped cylinder (1, and the prepared cloth band may then be given one or more turns about the abutting ends 12 and c. The cemented band thus renders the connection impervious to the passage of liquids. In this case, as in the others, the connection is completed and secured by means of the clasped clips c.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pipe connection formed of two lengths of pipe, a cylinder placed partially Within the end of one of them and attached thereto, the exposed end of said cylinder slidable within the end of the other length, bands about said lengths, and clips connecting said bands, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pipe connection formed of two lengths of pipe a cylinder slidable within and contacting with the inner surfaces of the abutting ends of said lengths, bands about said lengths, and clips connecting said bands, substantially as shown and described.
3. Apipe connection formed of two lengths of pipe, a cylinder placed partially within the end of one of them and attached thereto, the exposed end of the said cylinder slidable within the end of the other length, bands of a larger diameter than said lengths attached about them, and clips connecting said bands, substantially as shown and described.
4. A pipe connection formed of two lengths of pipe, a cylinder slidable within and contacting with the inner surfaces of the abutting ends of said lengths, bands of a larger diameter than said lengths attached about them, and clips connecting said bands, substantially as shown and described.
5. A pipe connection formed of two lengths of pipe, a cylinder placed partially within the end of one of them and attached thereto, the
exposed end of the said cylinder slidable I 6. A-pipe connection formed of two lengths of pipe, a cylinder placed partially within the end of one of them and attached thereto, the exposed end of the said cylinder slidable within the end of the other length, a wrapping impervious to liquids cemented about the said cylinder and the abutting ends of said lengths, bands of a larger diameter than said lengths attached about them, and clips connecting said hands, substantially as shown and described.
