ALFRED CHANDLER, OF PAIGNTON, ENGLAND.
M ETALLIC LABEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,148, dated July '7, 1903.
Application filed February 25, 1903. Serial No. 145,070, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED CHANDLER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Avonlea, Paignton, in the courity of Devon, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Labels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic labels for trees, plants, and such like purposes; and its objects are primarily to construct such labels so that the usual rasping metallic ringing noise arising from their contact with the trees or other bodies when being blown about by the wind or other cause is very much lessened, if not entirely removed, also improved methods of holding such labels, and in the production generally of such labels. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front View of one of these my improvedlabels. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the label shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line A 13, Fig. 1. Fig. i is a front View of a modified form of my improved label. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line C D, Fig. 5.
Similar numbers refer to similar throughout the several views.
The metallic labels now in use are found to be Very objectionable owing to the unpleasant noise caused by their swinging against others or against the trees or pots or other bodies upon which they are hung, as it will be readily understood that where a large number of such labels are used their combined sound would be considerable. In order to overcome this, I bind one or both ends or sides of the thin metallic (usually copper) label 8 with clips 9, made of lead or other metal which will deaden the sound. Usually the mere binding of the covering metal is sufficient; but they may be riveted, soldered, or eyeleted, if necessary. Such binding-clips materially strengthen the said labels. I further provide these labels with wire holders 10, which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, may be inserted into the soil or bent parts around a twig or the like. The holder may be modified, as shown at 10 in Figs. 4 and 5, so that the upper end 11 may be used for hanging the label or for being clipped to the side of the pot. Primarily, however, this doubled end 11 is intended forinserting into the ground, (the drawing Fig. 4 to be read as inverted for this purpose,) so as to more effectually prevent accidental removal, and particularly so in frosty weather. The label is also usually strengthened by making beadings or ribs, such as 12, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) upon its surface. The names of the plants, &C., and the name of grower, &c., are readily impressed upon the label by means of selective steel punches arranged in a holder, so that the required words may be made up and then the tool thus formed impressed upon the metal by a blow'or press upon a suitable impressible bed.
-What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. A label of the character described, consisting of a sheet of relatively hard metal, and a sound-deadening clip of soft metal attached to the edge portion of such sheet, substantially as described.
2. A label of the character described, consisting of a sheet of relatively hard metal, a sound-deadening clip of soft metal attached to the edge portion of said sheet, and a Wire support attached to the said clip, for the purpose specified.
3. A label of the character described, consisting of a sheet of relatively hard metal, said sheet being ribbed along its opposite edges, and a sound-deadening clip of soft material attached to the edge portion of said sheet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED CHANDLER.
