WASHING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,139, dated July '7, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, EDMUND L. BULLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-lilachines; andIdo declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in washing-machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which may be applied to an ordinary tub to wash the clothes therein.
A further object is to provide a machine of this character which will be simple in construction, effective in use, strong and durable, and well adapted to the use for which it is designed.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a wash-tub, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the machine removed from the tub. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the tub, which may be of the ordinary or any approved type. 2 denotes the washing-machine, consisting of a main supporting-board 3, which is adapted to rest upon the top of the tub and to be held thereon by means of adjustable catches 4.
5 denotes a tubularstandard which is adapted to project upwardly through the board 3, and to the upper end of the standard 5is connected a cross-bar 6, having fixed to its outer ends downwardly-depending arms 7, each of which are provided with a series of notches 8.

slots 10 formed therein, through which are adapted to be passed pins or screws 12 and by means of which the'bar is slidably connected to the board 3. On the ends of the bars are formed lugs or fingers 13, which are adapted to engage the notches 8 to adjustably support the arms 7 and bar 6 upon the board 3.
14 and 15 denote laterally-projecting bars fixed to the lower end of the standard 5 and having formed near their outer ends alined guide-openings 16. On the ends of the bars 14 and 15 are fixed upwardly-projecting arms 17, on the upper end of which are formed bearings-in which is adapted to be mounted ahorizontally-disposed shaft 18, which passes through the tubular standard 5 and on which is mounted a bevel-gear pinion 19, said pinion being arranged in the tubular standard 5.
2O denotes a vertically-disposed shaft arranged in the tubular standard 5 and journaled at its upper end in a suitable bracket 21, fixed to the bar 6. On the lower end of said shaft is fixed a bevel gear, which is adapted to mesh with the gear-pinion 19 on the shaft 18, and on the upper end of the shaft 20 is fixed a bevel-gear 22, which is adapted tomesh with a similar gear 23, fixed on the end of a horizontally-disposed driveshaft 24, mounted in bearings on the bar 6. On the opposite end of the shaft 24is attached a crank-handle 26.
27 and 28 denote cams or eccentrics fixed on the shaft 18 at each side of the tubular standard 5, and around said cams are arranged straps or collars 29 and 30. To the lower sides of said bands or collars are connected depending arms 31 and 32, which are adapted to enter and to have a sliding engagement with the upper ends of pounderarms 32. Said engagement may be effected in anysuitable manner, the connection shown in the drawings being made by forming the arms 32 hollow for a portion of their length and providing the same with one or more vertically-disposed slots 33, the lower ends of the arms 31 being inserted in the hollow ends of the arms 32, and pins 34 being driven through the slots 33 and into the arms 3l,wherebya limited sliding or telescoping movement is given the arms 31 and 32. Coil-springs 35 are inserted in the hollow ends of the arms 32 below the end of the arms 31 and are adapted to nor mally force the arms 3']. upwardly.
36 denotes pounder-heads fixed to the lower ends of the arms 32 and consisting, preferably, of rectangular blocks, the under surfaces of which are ribbed or corrugated.
In practice the machine is placed upon a tub and securely fastened thereto by means of the catches 4. The auxiliary supportingframe is now adjusted to the desired height by means of the notched arms 7 and engaging finger 13. The clothes to be washed having been previously placed in the tub of Water, the crank-handle is now operated, which will rotate the cams or eccentrics through the medium of the shafts and gears hereinbefore described to reciprocate the pounderarms and pounders, the springs interposed in said arms causing the pounders to strike the clothes with a yielding force, so that the same will not be injured.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg In a machine of the character described, the combination with a main supportingboard adapted to be fastened upon a tub or other receptacle, of a horizontally-disposed bar adjustably supported above said board, means for effecting adjustment, a depending tubular standard carried by said cross-bar, laterally-projecting bars carried bysaid standard, pounder-arms reciprocatingly mounted in the outer ends of said bars, pounders fixed to the lower ends of said arms, and means for reciprocating said pounder arms and pounders, substantially as described.
