Be it known that I, GEORGE W. .I-IoLLY, a

of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hanging Sliding Doors, of l which the following is a specification.

` Thisinveniion relates to an improved means for hanging sliding doors; andthe object thereof is to provide a cheap, durable, and

eicient means for hanging doors whereby they will be prevented from sagging orlbinding within the pocket formed by the parti'- tion-walls of the structure in which they are hung. y

Further objects, as well as the peculiar details of construction, will be clearly described hereinafter and defined` in the appended claims. f

In the drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of the door hung in accordance with my invention and illustrated as being closed or projected forward. Fig; 2 is similar view showing the door within the pocket.

The two sets of levers are secured to each other and to the door, as will be hereinafter explained. Twosimilar sets of levers Y 10 and 1l are secured to the bottom of the frame by pivotal connections l2 and 13 and arealso pivotally secured to the lower portion of the door. The toggle-levers 6 are pivotally connected to the levers 10 by a link connection 14, while the se't designated by the reference-numeral 7 is pivotally connected to Athe set 1l by a similar connection 15 in order to strengthen the saine and provide for perfeet unison of action. It will be noticed that the connections 14 and lcross one another, causing the top levers to alternate with the lower sets, so that one set of levers from the top and bottom, respectively, will be folded against the rear of the frame when the door is retracted in the pocket. The opposite sets will be folded against the door when said door is projected from the pocket to close the open ing between the two arms.

. One of the features of this invention is to also provide means for swinging the door outward. In order to do this, I arrange `a plate 16 on the rear edge of the door near the top, to which is hinged a similar plate 17, provided with right-angular longitudinally-arranged flanges 18 and 19, between which is pivoted a block 20, provided with a projecting pin 21, to which one arm, respectively, of the togglo- levers 6 and 7 are pivotally secured. In Fig. 8 I have illustrated a modified. form of levers, in which 27 and 28 designate two T-shaped bars connected by cross-links 29 and 30. These may be used in lieu of the togr IOO gle-levers above referred to; but I prefer the form illustrated in Figs. l, 2, and 3.

In Fig. 9 I have illustrated a pair of sliding doors fitted in a suitable frame. One of the doors is shown as retracted and the other one-projected.

It will thus be seen that I have provided an efticient means for hanging doors, and the objections ordinarily raised in regard to this class of devices will be overcome. I also desire to particularly pointv out the peculiar novel manner of providing a combined swinging and sliding door whereby either type of door is provided Without altering the construction of the device.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which this invention relates to make and use the same, I have specifically described what to me at this time appears to be the Very best means of accomplishing the desired result. However, I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, but reserve the right to make such slight changes and alterations as would suggest themselves from time to time without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a door-hanger, the combination with a frame and a door, of toggle-levers adapted to project and retract the door within the .frame, a hinged connection carried by the door and a block adjustably carried by the hinged connection and connected to the toggle-levers, whereby the said door may swing laterally with relation to the frame. i

2. In a door-hanger for a sliding and swinging door, the combination with a frame and door, of toggle-levers pivotally secured tothe top and bottom of said frame, hinges carried by said door, adjustable blocks pivotally secured to the hinges, and means for pivotally securing the levers to the blocks.

8. In a door-hanger for a sliding and swingi-ng door, the combination with a frame and door, of toggle-levers pivotally secured to the top and bottom of said frame, link connections connected to said levers, hinges carried by said door, a block pivoted to one leaf of each hinge, an adjusting-screw adapted to regulate the pitch of the block, and means for pivotally securing the levers to said block.
